[SOLVED] Drivers Mgr Window comes up for no reason

Post by Oskar1224 »

In my Windows 8.1 laptop I have VirtualBox and on it I installed LM 20.1. All is working good but every time I boot into LM this Driver Manager window comes up and asks me to check my drivers which I did at the beginning, it said no new drivers needed and I closed the window. How can I remove it now?

I checked my start up applications and here is the list of the ones enabled:

Cinnamon settings daemon-xrandr
Ctrl Alt Backspace
Flatpack
lm-launch
SSH key agent
System reports
Update manager
Warpinator
xapp-sn-watcher

Except the system reports + update manager I have no idea what the others do.

Did you install Virtualbox Guest Additions? That might take care of the problem. Go to Devices/Insert Guest Additions CD and install from there.

I have Virtual Box and not VMware, I don't have any Device menu. I have Settings but no Device in there. If I remember correctly the Guest Additions... is in VMware?

One is usually asked to check drivers when running Cinnamon when graphics hardware acceleration is not running.

What is the output of inxi -Fxxxrz on your LM20.1 install?

This is why you are getting the message. You are running in software rendering mode (without hardware acceleration).

Graphics:
Device-1: VMware SVGA II Adapter driver: vmwgfx v: 2.15.0.0
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 15ad:0405
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: vmware
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 800x600~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.2.6
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

Based on output in another thread, the renderer should be renderer: SVGA3D.

As you can see above, your graphics device is VMware SVGA II Adapter and your driver is vmware, so the Guest Additions does apply to your install.

What are your Display Settings in VirtualBox..
They should look something like this..
VB.png
From memory 3D acceleration is not enabled by default & minimum Video Memory is enabled.
Check the 3D acceleration box & give the Mint guest as much Video Memory as you can..

Kind of confused here folks, my display settings looks like posted by RiH and the options under graphics controller are:

VBoxVGA
VMSVGA
VBoxSVGA
None

Perhaps my choice should be VMSVGA or VBoxVGA?

VMSVGA has always worked with Linux Guests for me.
VBoxVGA is for Windows Guests..

I used the VMSVGA and after boot the message came up again, searched for drivers and found none then I reboot again and now that window didn't come up. I think we found the solutions.

My thanks to all

You were correct SMG. The Display area should have looked like this..

Out of curiosity SMG which another thread you are referring?

I noticed talking about VMware and on VMware I only have XP-PRO and Windows7,

LM is installed on the VirtualBox alone.

You indicated in your first post you were running Windows 8.1. :?

I've helped several people with issues related to the default resolution not being correct. Here is one thread [solved!]setting default display size where the person has the video acceleration, but not the correct monitor resolution.

The Machine information and the Graphics information will be the same when you are running the same version of Mint in the VM. The below information is from yours. You can compare it to the inxi output in other thread and will find the Machine info is exactly the same. The Graphics info is different because the other person had the correct settings and was not getting the error you had.

Code: Select all

Machine:
Type: Virtualbox System: innotek product: VirtualBox v: 1.2
serial: <filter> Chassis: Oracle Corporation type: 1 serial: <filter>
Mobo: Oracle model: VirtualBox v: 1.2 serial: <filter> BIOS: innotek
v: VirtualBox date: 12/01/2006

Graphics:
Device-1: VMware SVGA II Adapter driver: vmwgfx v: 2.15.0.0
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 15ad:0405
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: vmware

Trying to understand I noticed on the first output of “inxi -.....” under Graphics it states:
Device-1: VMware SVGA II Adapter driver: vmwgfx v: 2.15.0.0

But what I don’t understand is where the VMware adapter comes from because the “inxi...” command was from within LM inside the VirtualBox and not the VMware.

Checking the display in my ASUS laptop states: Intel HD Graphics 4600

That’s confusing to me but I’m sure there is an explanation.

You'll have to check the documentation for the software you are using. I found the following:
Oracle® VM VirtualBox User Manual for Release 6.1: Chapter 4 Guest Additions indicates, "Better video support. While the virtual graphics card which Oracle VM VirtualBox emulates for any guest operating system provides all the basic features, the custom video drivers that are installed with the Guest Additions provide you with extra high and non-standard video modes, as well as accelerated video performance."

I do not see where it indicates it is passing through the hardware for graphics capability, but I also may not have found the correct documentation for what you are using.

Thank you for your time SMG

I can see the reason now although difficult to grasp all the technicalities of it. Most important is my problem is solved and given some time I will learn more including this subject
