Moving from Linux Mint 19 to 21

Post by Gabriele »

Hi,

I'like to move to linux mint 21 (and i have to move anyway because 19 is expiring, do I?).
Does some know a good tutorial?
I have also to let know that my pc is a 255 g7 hp that had some problem with drivers for wireless connection with 19 Tara at begining (driver not found on the distribution but loaded apart, i have a folder called "rtl8821ce" on home with driver inside.

Thanks

Gabriele

Have patience. LM 21 needs a month or 2 until release.

Yes, in 1 year the party for LM 19 is over. So stepping over is necessary, but it is not urgent.

No indication that any substantial changes in installation of Mint will take place with the forthcoming 21.0 release. Therefore, the official installation guide stands as it is now. There is this new smart upgrade tool. You could upgrade from 19.3 to 20 and the all the way up to the latest n greatest Mint. Tedious imho and hard to believe it is going to be smooth. As for the realtek wifi rtl8821xx chipsets, drivers are still not included in the kernel. You will have once more to install em manually.

The new upgrade tool will be only for upgrading from LM20.3 to LM21.

Upgrading from LM19.3 to LM20 is done manually as per the instructions in this link How to upgrade to Linux Mint 20.

Upgrading from LM20 to other point releases of LM20 can be done through Update Manager.

No tutorial necessary. When doing a major version upgrade, I always
1) backed up all my data
2) wipe the old installation and replace with the new version
3) update the new installation
4) restore my data...
...then it's back to business as usual.

I read now on phoronix that Realtek committed new patches for rtl8821xx wifi chips to kernel developers. No specific mention on the rtl8821ce though.
