(S) How Long for the ISO for Cinnamon 21 to Do Its Job?

Post by Alvin »

I have not seen any estimates of how long it would take the ISO I have transferred to a USB stick to complete installing the new Cinnamon Mint 21 in my older computer with only a dual CPU and 4MB of ram? Would anyone have done this and be able to tell me?
Before I start, I would very much like to know how much time I should set aside for the creation of the new OS.
My old desktop has only a 250 GB hard drive.

30 minutes to an hour on an old machine like that
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Yeah, that looks like a typing error.

Did you "burn" it to the stick?
to complete installing the new Cinnamon Mint 21 in my older computer with only a dual CPU and 4MB of ram?
After entering name and password I always say 8 minutes. The one I did yesterday with 21, wiping disk and installing 21 over 20.2, seemed to take 6 minutes.

To do updates after that allow another up to 8 minutes though I'll admit not having timed that bit, it could be less.

As for drive size, computers with everything from 30GB up to a TB.
RAM? 2GB and up.

That 2GB and up is really a minimum deal with VERY basic one thing at a time- use case scenario these days

4GB or better will provide a more stable and better usage experience being this is Linux Mint 20 and 21 era primarily..not version 16 and older.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that just about any Linux distro ( as well as Microsoft Windows versions) become larger in overall build/coding to account for more devices..more drivers, more security patches..etc and of course more modern gui and features.
Primary rig:
asrock x570 taichi
ryzen 5900x
128GB of kingston fury at 3600mhz 1.44 volts 20-20-20 ( I forgot the rest) 1T timings
corsair mp600 pro xt NVME ssd 4TB
8GB rx580 sapphire nitro+ video card
Viewsonic Elite UHD 32" 144hz monitor

Except he has 4GB of RAM and if you want me to I'll answer this with a 2015, 2GB RAM laptop with Cinnamon 20.3.

The installation done two days ago was Cinnamon 20.3, on a 2008, HP laptop, with 4GB of RAM. And yes, it goes well.

since you've got the ISO ready,
then it would be prudent, to wait until Tropical Hurricane Ian has passed,
and you have your power supply restored, again.

I found the installation from ISO stick, not counting the creation of the ISO stick, rapid for a system installation. Very little BS as when Windows is at work! For the ISO to do its job, I would guess less than 15 minutes. I did not time it.
My second computer, both old (HP 8300 Elite and Inspiron 660s) I chanced installing a clone of the first system, once I had added my customizations. That saved me much time doing the second computer. That method is not recommended, but I chanced using Foxclone to clone, and it seems to have worked very well.

Thanks!
