After the Mint logo is shown and the user login is made, I get either a black screen or only _ in the upper left corner of the screen.
Is this the same laptop you posted about in this topic [Solved] Problem with booting Linux Mint?
No, this is my desktop computer.

At this point, it does not seem to be an Nvidia issue (based on the inxi data you posted).

What are the steps you are doing to get to the screen where you ran the inxi information?

Are you able to boot normally, log in, and then switch to TTY screen (Ctl-Alt-F1) when you get the black screen? If so, perhaps we can get log information by running:

Code: Select all

journalctl -rb | nc termbin.com 9999
That command prints the journal log information of the current boot cycle in reverse order (so the reason for the black screen should be near the top) and sends it to termbin. It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

I enter the recovery mode via the GRUB menu and choose the 'root' option.

I can't switch to the TTY screen. I'm maybe get it when I press those keypads, but the screen is still black.

The only way I can think of to get the log information is for you to boot to the black screen, then restart the computer and go to the root prompt and run this command:

Code: Select all

journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
If you have internet access in that mode, it will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which you stopped with the power button) in reverse order (so the reason for the black screen should be near the top) and sends it to termbin.

Okay. Then did you restart the computer and go to the root prompt to run the command or are you not able to get to the root prompt any more?

At that point were you able to run the command I gave in the earlier post? It should return with a url which is a web link to the information if your internet connection works on that computer. We need to know the url so we can see the info.

Sometimes the termbin server is down. If you try again another time and still get that message, then I'm out of ideas.

Without a log, I do not have any guesses as to why the system is not booting properly. From your earlier data, it seems the graphics driver is installed and correct.

Without knowing what might be wrong I have no idea what might fix the situation other than backing up all your data and doing a re-install. :(

If you have Timeshift backup restore it from live usb. If you don't have, take care of it the next time.

That suggestion was made four months ago when this topic was originally created. This topic only came up again because someone decided to erroneously add their issue to someone else's topic instead of creating their own topic.

This advice saved my butt yesterday. After a power outage, Mint came back up to a crippled desktop, just showing a Nemo window and a black background.

I got the recovery menu, went to terminal, and launched a restore from

Code: Select all

sudo timeshift --restore
like @SMG said.

I'm glad I enabled that during setup. :D
