Mint 13 Installation fails kernel NULL pointer dereference

Post by DuckOfDeath » Mon May 28, 2012 2:19 pm

Hi,

I'm not sure if I should post this here, or report this somewhere as a bug. Apologies if I got it wrong.

I have trouble installing Mint 13 on my laptop. I use the mate 32 bit
image burnt on DVD. Booting and working with the live system works fine, no problems there. When starting the installation by clicking the icon on the desktop, i first choose English as language. On the next screen "Preparing to install Linux Mint" i click "Continue", and then after a few seconds of activity on my DVD drive i get an error screen (screenshot attached, apoligies for the bad image quality) with the kernel NULL pointer dereference error. I can still move the mouse pointer around.
The error is reproducable, i.e. this happen every time.

Additional details, possibly relevant:
I checked the md5 checksum of the image (43ca0be4501b9d1a46fea25ec2cd556e), and had the burnt image verified.
It makes no diference whether I am connected to the internet or not.
I also tried the cinnamon 32 bit image. There I got a similar error when pressing "back" from the windows where i can change the partitioning of my hard disk. I havent checked under which exact circumstances this happens.

I'll be happy to provide any further info if necessary.

Thanks,
Michael

I redirected the output of rsyslogd to an attached usb drive and to the hard disk, but the kernel oops message was not saved there. Is there a way to do this?
I have attached a better screenshot this time, in case anyone is interested.

Anyway, since there was no reply in the meantime, I finally decided to install the Debian edition instead. No problems there.

My Maya installation produces a very similar kernel oops, and at the same time.

I have Althon XP, chipset VIA KT400, graphics card nvidia 6200, some build-in wired Etherned port. I had never any kernel oops problems with the hardware, except for the Maya installation.

With a replaced graphics card, the problem is gone. And also, users of other distros had similar problems with kernel, so perhaps it is not mint--related.

After the installation, I updated the distro, put the card back, and it works fine.

Make sure you have installed the graphics driver for your 6200 card.
