[SOLVED] Win7 cant boot from Grub entry after Linux Install

Post by AAAAHHHHHHH »

I had Win7 installed, installed Linux Mint 12 on added partition on same harddisk. Grub co-installed itself with an entry for Linux and Win7. Yet when I choose Win7 there is some loading going on with an eventual redirection to Linux. So: I cant boot Win7. Which files do I need to edit?

Re: Win7 cant boot from Grub entry after Linux Mint Install

Hi there. I would first boot into linux and open a terminal and run
sudo update-grub

And then reboot and select Windows.

If the problem persists, please download and run this http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ and post the results inside

You'll probably need to edit the file boot/grub/grub.cfg. Post a copy here so we can look at it. However, it's possible that the Windows bootloader is faulty. If you select Windows from the grub menu, it just re-directs to the original Windows loader.
I agree with mintybits, try sudo update-grub first.

Mintybits and HughT: Thank you for your reply. Very unpolite of me not to answer for 12 days!

I updated Grub, rebooted and selected the Win7-entry. I was redirected to the Grub-menu.

I ran the bootinfoscript. You find the output (that contains the /boot/grub/grub.cfg) below.

My harddisk contains a Win7 partition sda1 and an extended partition sda2.

Within sda2 there are five data partitions sda5-sda9, a swap partition sda10 and a Linux Mint partition sda11.

I'd be glad to hear from you and understand how to operate grub!

Unfortunately, you installed Grub to sda1 at some point and this has trashed your Windows partition boot record. Lots of people make this easy mistake and the Mint installer let's you make it.

You'll have to repair this using your Windows installation CD (boot repair) or by some 3rd party tool. Others may be able to advise.

Yes, what mintybits said. First put GRUB in the correct location /dev/sda NOT /dev/sda1, run this and follow prompts, ensure /dev/sda is your choice of where GRUB is installed;

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
EDIT: At this point Windows won't be on the GRUB menu until you repair the Windows 7 VBR.

Now, repair Windows 7 VBR (aka PBR), NOT MBR. Boot Windows 7 or 8 install or repair disk, go to advanced repair options and ultimately the command prompt from the Windows recovery environment then run;

Code: Select all

bootsect.exe /nt60 C:
This will attempt to put a new Windows 7 VBR on what Linux calls /dev/sda1

EDIT: Now to ensure the Windows entry appears, remove disk, reboot to Linux Mint, then run;

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
If all is well you will now be dual-booting....
rtfm - read the fine manual...

On the Windows Repair/Installation disk command bootrec.exe /fixboot should fix the problem. There is not needed to run fixmbr.

1) The neosmart recovery disks are no longer free, however, you can use Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO burned to a DVD instead. Or as noted, a Windows 7 install DVD.

2) bootrec.exe /fixboot does the same thing as the above command I posted, however, I'm not sure how bootrec.exe discovers the Windows system partition. If you choose to use it and it works, fine, if it doesn't then use bootsect.exe because you can tell it which drive to put your boot record (or use the "ALL" option) AKA boot partition boot record (PBR) AKA volume boot record (VBR) AKA boot sector (not master boot sector). Anyway, pretty much does the same thing. :)

Bootsect:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... v=ws.10%29

EDIT: I should reiterate that no matter which method used to fix your Windows PBR, you should fix GRUB first, because right now you have the Windows MBR installed in the MBR location (not GRUB), and if you fix the Windows PBR, you will overwrite your current GRUB boot loader, then Windows will boot, but Linux won't boot until you fix GRUB by other means, or boot Linux by other means. This isn't the end of the world, but you will need to either boot Linux from a USB or DVD that has GRUB on it (and boot Linux from the GRUB command prompt at boot) or boot a live system to fix GRUB.

Alternately if you fix Windows and can't boot to Linux, you can use certain 3rd party solutions to boot Linux from the Windows 7 boot manager / BCD store.

FYI, for PC BIOS computers and hard drives, the way Windows boots is: Power Good on CPU > BIOS ROM code > MBR on disk designated by BIOS > PBR (active or bootable partition) > bootmgr > etc.

Normal method for GRUB boots Linux: CPU > BIOS > MBR (GRUB here) > core.img file located by GRUB MBR code found normally in /boot/grub on Linux partition (boot or root).

This means GRUB in the MBR and a windows PBR can coexist. It also means you break the chain somewhere without configuration to dual-boot, stuff needs to get fixed....

OK, I probably went a little overboard with this explanation, but... :mrgreen:

@breaker: I used your 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc'-command without success.

- I don't understand the 1. slide (see below) and my approval of 'vga=794' might be the reason for failure.

- I understood, approved and am 'non-suspicious' of the 2. slide (not included because 3 attachments are maximum) and choice of 'quiet splash'.

- In the 3. slide (see below) I chose /dev/sda over /dev/sda11 as emphasized. (An adverse retrial had none of the subsequent choices lead to a different outcome).

- In the 'non-enlightening' 4. slide (see below) my intuitive bold choice of 'No' (i.e. 'Install Grub Anyway') redirected me to the 3. slide. The choice of 'Yes' initiated some Bash-Terminal-displayed operations. The inspection of new reports by the aforementioned bootinfoscript-program (and rebooting) however disapproved of any determinative changes.

The following information is not concerned with question in place yet I'd like to share it.

@breaker, @oobetimer: I would not spent $10 on the Neosmart Software, because I only assign 5% probabilities to any software or procedure to resolve any given problem - due to my painful yet personal experiences. After iterative approaches I eventually had the Neosmart EasyBSD-Software have my Win7 bootloader recognize a previously installed Ubuntu-OS (which I abandoned in favor of Linux Mint due to its - if I may say - annoying name). I intend to apply this procedure again once I get into Win7 and wonder if I'll have a two-entry Grub- and a consecutive two-entry Win7-Bootloader-Screen.

To approve your suggestions: To get into Win7 I'll try to find a free Win7 Recovery ISO, apply your suggested commands/steps and update Grub so to add the Win7 entry. If that doesn't work, I'll try to get Linux to copy a bootable version of my Win7-Iso-Image to my USB-Stick (AAAAHHHHHHH!) for reinstallation.

You are right, $10 is far too much about windows-disk .. :lol:

PS. bootrec.exe /fixboot is the easy way to repair windows boot .. :wink:

Reconfiguring grub-pc was unnecessary, because there is no trouble with grub. /dev/sda is the right place for grub (you have to tick the choice using space-bar)

Really?

From his boot info script...

Code: Select all

Boot sector info: Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the boot sector of sda1
/dev/sda1 is where GRUB is, not /dev/sda, this is a problem, unless I'm missing something.

Once you run the bootrec /fixboot you will wipe that out...

How does AAAAHHHHHHH boots Mint if there has no grub in MBR? .. :shock:

Simple. The Windows MBR code simply chain-loads the first boot-flagged (AKA active) PBR. It doesn't matter what the code is. :)

So, I presume, the MBR code is Windows 7 right now, and the PBR is GRUB.

Here, AAAAHHHHHHH, please clarify by posting the output from these commands into code tags, thanks!

Code: Select all

sudo hexdump -C -n 512 /dev/sda

Re: Win7 cant boot from Grub entry after Linux Mint Install

Post by breaker »

Yes, so I was correct, your Windows 7 MBR is chainloading the GRUB PBR. That's why I think this happens:
Yet when I choose Win7 there is some loading going on with an eventual redirection to Linux.
So, basically the GRUB code in /dev/sda1 was installed with the code that tells it the rest of GRUB (core.img, modules, and grub.cfg) reside in /dev/sda11. /dev/sda1 used to contain the Windows 7 PBR that called Windows 7 bootmgr and BCD store to boot Windows 7. This partition is marked bootable in your master partition table.

Now, re-reading what I will quote below makes me wonder if you just want to wipe out GRUB, because at first I thought you wanted to boot Windows and Linux with GRUB, but perhaps not?
After iterative approaches I eventually had the Neosmart EasyBSD-Software have my Win7 bootloader recognize a previously installed Ubuntu-OS (which I abandoned in favor of Linux Mint due to its - if I may say - annoying name). I intend to apply this procedure again once I get into Win7 and wonder if I'll have a two-entry Grub- and a consecutive two-entry Win7-Bootloader-Screen.
If you say you are planning to use EasyBCD, then you don't need GRUB at all. Just fix the Windows PBR (boot loader) with previously mentioned commands, boot to Windows 7, install EasyBCD, configure BCD Store menus to boot Linux Mint and you are done.

I don't suspect you will see multiple entries for anything, besides, EasyBCD lets you delete and create entries. Just don't go deleting all entries then rebooting, lol.

If you do want to use GRUB, then you can try with or without (try with first, maybe your system needs it for graphics) the VGA= line, then like oobetimer said, press spacebar to select the /dev/sda (not /dev/sda1), then it won't say "You chose not to install GRUB to any devices" If it says that, you didn't select it.

So, in summary, it is up to you, use Windows 7 boot manager / BCD or use GRUB. Either way you can dual-boot. Let us know what you pick...

cheers :)

P.S. If you compare your hexdump to what is shown at this web page, you can see you do have Win7 MBR in /dev/sda - http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/mbr/W7MBR.htm

I chose /dev/sda over /dev/sda11 as emphasized
I didn't say not /dev/sda11, I said not /dev/sda1, in either case, pick /dev/sda (no numbers after the letter "a")!!

@oobetimer, here is a good explanation of why the Windows MBR code can and did boot the GRUB boot loader code and ultimately Linux;
NOTE: Even though we're examining code created by a Microsoft Operating System, this MBR can also be used to start the boot process for any operating system's Boot Record on an x86-CPU based (PC) computer as long as that OS is: 1) on the Primary Master hard drive, 2) set to be the only Active partition and 3) it has a boot loader in the first sector of that partition. Most Linux OS distributions can install LILO or GRUB as a Boot Record rather than in the MBR and following sectors, so even the oldest MBR by Microsoft could still be used to boot Linux; as long as its boot code was at or under the 1024 cylinder limit that is. Furthermore, the CPU itself must be an 80286 or later in order to use the Win7 MBR code, since some of the opcodes (see Code below) will only run on an 80286 or later CPU.

As I opened this thread I'd like to report on my progress and add some closing comments.

@breaker, @oobetimer: Pressing the space-bar in that 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc'-menu indeed resolved the issue: The /dev/sda - choice was acknowledged and a new report by the aforementioned bootinfoscript showed that Grub was now written to the MBR. To confirm breaker's dispute with oobetimer I'd say that the posted first bootinfoscript-report actually said that the MBR was previously Windows-written.

@breaker: You argued that the Defection of the Windows Bootloader and consecutive necessity of some kind of Windows Installation or Recovery and my intention to use EasyBCD.exe from within Windows afterwards rendered the successful application of 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc' obsolete. You were right. However I sticked with it for the sake of time I'd already put into it and the proximity of succeeding and knowledge acquisition.

@breaker, @oobetimer: To repair the destroyed Windows Bootloader on sda1 I'd certainly have liked to try out either of your Windows Commands (bootsect.exe and bootrec.exe), yet my Windows Recovery ISO Torrent did not load. I tried to write my Win7 ISO to my USB-Stick by Command-Line but it rendered it unmountable due to some damaged Superblock. Usage of the GUI Gparted resolved that issue and along some advice from another thread I had an purposely outdated GUI UnetBootin-Version accomplish the writing task. The USB was bootable.

For the sake of potential insight I'd like to go on and add the following:

The new Win Install wiped the Grub in the MBR and the aforementioned EasyBCD.exe-program within Windows eventually added a working Linux Mint OS entry to the Windows Bootmenu. That entry did direct me to the same Grub Menu I had before and I recognized it for its smaller font I had given it with some Grub-GUI (which I did install and use with intend to solve the dualboot issue). The Win7-Entry in that Grub Menu would again redirect me to the Grub Menu. However I think I did have the Windows partition encrypted at that point by Truecrypt. (The for sake of brevity so far unmentioned, MBR-writing Truecrypt-Encryption was the reason for my necessary choice of EasyBCD/Win-Bootmenu over Grub!) I might decrypt Windows and apply 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc' from within Linux and see if that Grub-Win7-Entry directs me to the double-choice Win-Bootmenu (with its Linux entry directing me to the Grub Menu again). Adjusting boot-sequences and timeouts for both menus with EasyBCD and that Grub-GUI might render an endless redirection-circle, hehe. (I am not sure if I use the word render in the right way, I am not a native speaker.)

I need to add that the Linux-Entry in that Grub Menu gets me into Linux! The dualboot issue is resolved henceforth.
