That's too bad. Did you try those commands at the GRUB boot shell just to see what happens anyway? I agree you seem to need a new hard drive though.

Anyway, one thing I have run into is when resizing NTFS partitions, Windows needs a check disk run before the filesystem is "clean" again. Did the installer do the resizing for you? If you open the graphical partition table editor (gparted) then chose the /dev/sda1, then right-click it and pick properties, and if it has an error to run chkdsk /f twice, then this is your issue. You need to use your Windows XP x64 install CD, boot to recovery console, and attempt this. Except in recovery console, there is no /f I don't think (just in regular windows), anyway see link below.

That boot info script RESULTS.TXT might also be helpful...

Finally, you can manually attempt to chainload Windows from GRUB shell at boot;

Code: Select all

set root=/dev/sda1
chainloader +1
boot
This is typed at the GRUB shell at boot...
I made a big mistake above, here is the correct code lines, pressing enter after each at the GRUB shell (access from GRUB boot menu at boot);

Code: Select all

set root=(hd0,1)
chainloader +1
boot
This will attempt to load Windows from GRUB, if nothing else, you might get a Windows error message.

When I saw those SMART numbers I was like :shock: . If you decide to get a new hard drive, then perhaps you can keep the old one, zero-write it, then store media files that you're willing to lose on it. Don't throw it away, and don't sell it - that would just be wrong on so many levels.

tried the code breaker gave me which is...

Code: Select all

set root=(hd0,1)
chainloader +1
boot
and it gives an error with only a reboot option.

found my windows installer disk but it won't boot. oh, well. at least the 9.5gb linux partition is still working fine with no problems. hopefully, it stays this way for a few more months (to years). thanks all. i just wish my win xp partition could have been revived and recovered. :(

What is the error exactly, just out of curiosity?

If the filesystem is broken, it does not boot. Just for testing you could try to boot using this CD
