Grub disappeared after installing LM13

Post by rado84 » Sun Aug 19, 2012 9:42 am

I have 2 HDDs and on the second one there was Ubuntu but it glitched too much, so I decided to install LM13 as it was recommended to me by a friend. When it started it asked me what to do - delete Ubuntu and reinstall or delete everything. I selected to reinstall and remove Ubuntu. Everything was fine till the moment I restarted the system. There was a message "error: no such device" and "grub rescue>" but I don't know what to type in there, so I started the live version again. I should also mention that there is a Windows 7 on the main HDD which I can not start as well because apparently the boot sector has been either rewritten or deleted and that boot sector is on the main HDD.
I did some searching in Google and here's the output of the two commands I found but beyond that point I have no idea what to do. IF I could start Windows I'd fix this problem in no time.

Hello, rado84.

As neither OS seems to be able to boot, I assume that for an unknown reason Grub has been broken. I tend to assume it had been installed to /dev/sda, because doing so is what will be recommended in most cases, allowing Grub to be the main boot manager offering to startup either Linux Mint or Windows.

My suggestion would be to give Boot-Repair a chance and see if it manages to fix the problem. - In your case, you should try the steps starting in the section 2nd option : install Boot-Repair in Ubuntu, because you can follow them using your Linux Mint live/installation system.

Kind regards,
Karl

Those commands from the Boot-Repair link fixed the problem. Thanks very much! :)
But now there's another problem about which I'm gonna have to open another topic somewhere else.
