You disable in BIOS? You don't physically disconnect?
If so I'm lost - a modern operating system (actually from win98 and all other of the same age) don't give a damn about such BIOS settings - you should be able to use the disk anyway....
However if it is not recognized (check with gparted) I'm even more lost....

I don't want to take a step back, but you've changed the BIOS so that the computer looks for USB devices first, right?

And yet it still freezes?

Can you turn off quiet boot and see what step the freeze occurs at?
