I'm trying to install linux mint 13 on my computer for the first time. I have problems with the installation. I tried many things before asking for help. I have now an ALERT when booting from HD.
History of installation:
1) Under Windows 7: Download Linux mint 13 ISO from internet - put on DVD - installing Linux as explain in the 'Mint User Guide'
2) Boot with DVD, Linux 13 is functionning. Installing Linux mint 13 on a single partition (deleting Windows 7)
3) Linux mint 13 working well. I started to customize-it. I wanted to use my HD-TV as a monitor, so I enable it and disable my laptop monitor. TV did not recognized the video signal. I had no more monitor to switch back to laptop monitor.
4) Reboot from DVD - did not find out how to change settings on the HD system. I decided to re-install Linux Mint 13 from DVD.
5) Got an error window (in the background) saying something like 'you dont have permission to write in temporary directory', but I was enable to continue and finish the installation.
6) Reboot from HD - Linux is not booting
7) Reboot from DVD - create a bootable USB with Linux mint 13 ISO file
Reboot from USB - installing Linux from USB (one partition)- got the same background window error message
9) Not enable to boot from HD
10) Boot from USB - installing Linux on a second partition (two Linux partitions) (same background window error message)
11) Not enable to boot from HD (partition one and two)
12) Reboot from DVD - Erase partitions one and two with GParted application - Installing Linux on a single partition (no background window error message)
13) Not enable to boot from HD, but an alert message appears:
*****************************************************
Gave up waiting for root device. common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by_uuid/76545896-cfaa-4b75-af41-64c42dbb4003 does not exist.
Dropping to a shell
BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5 -1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

14) Reboot from USB - Go in forums - I saw a similar post on this forum concerning a problem when installing from USB :
Title : LinuxMint 13 won't boot up without bootable USB
by Ryanbayona
I tried the solution proposed by zerozero user, and I got a grub-install error message:
********************************
grup-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot (is /dev mounted?)
Installation finished. No problem reported
******************************
15) Reboot from HD, but the same ALERT appeared.
What is next for me?
Thanks
JF

First, do you have access to another computer to download isos and burn osos to a CD or DVD or usb flashdrive?
Have you ever did an md5sum integrity check on the DVD or CD you use to install?
Do you know how to enter the computer BIOS setup?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. See the answers for your questions down here in this post.
Q. First, do you have access to another computer to download isos and burn osos to a CD or DVD or usb flashdrive?
A. I don't have access to another computer at home, but I can manage to have access to another computer elsewhere. Linux 13 mint boots from DVD or USB. (I'm presently on my computer booted from the DVD).
Q. Have you ever did an md5sum integrity check on the DVD or CD you use to install?
A. Yes I did, as required in the installation section of the Linux mint user guide. The MD5 signature was correct.
Q. Do you know how to enter the computer BIOS setup?
A. Yes, I swap from HD boot to DVD boot to USB boot as required from the BIOS (pushing F2 while the computer starts)
Do you think I must re-download the ISO file from Linux website and restart from scratch?

Re: Linix mint 13 boot from dvd/USB but not from HD
I finally found what was causing my problem.
It is my external HD. When I connect it, it cannot be easily unmounted. Even if I 'remove safetly the HD', Linux is still searching for it at the next boot.
I resolved my booting problem by installing Linux mint 13 - KDE interface, but I still cannot use my external HD.
I will post on another topic for my external HD problem

That because the external HD is still in your /etc/fstab file ..jeanfnoel1 wrote:I finally found what was causing my problem.

You can easily solve the problem, uncommenting external HD´s line using # in the front of the line.
#Entry for external HD
#UUID=blallalaallaa /some_mountpoint filesystem defaults,umask=000 0 0
