Dualboot W7 Mint; can't boot Mint anymore

Post by andreazZz »

Hi,
This afternoon I finally installed W7 to my dekstop (for gaming purposes only ;) ). After the long way of installing I finally have W7 installed. But now I can't boot Mint anymore! Can someone please help me a little to make a dualboot in Windows 7? I can only find guides that describe how to make a dualboot in Mint, after installing Windows.

Can someone please help me?

Andreas

Hi andreazZz and welcome to Mint forums,

I would go here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
down load boot-repair and run it to reinstall grub which will boot either window 7 or Mint.

You may also want to look at Easy BCD at http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

But grub will work fine.

Cheers

I'm not sure what your saying about not being able to bot W7 and Linux. if you mean at the same time no your right you can't. You either have to choose one or the other.
you can run windows on a linux platform with Virtual machine.
you can also run linux in a VM on a Windows machine.

But if your talking about daul booting it is easy and is done on many thousand machine every day. including 3 here.

let me know if you need further help. but boot repair will set up the daul boot for you.
Cheers!

Thanks! I really appreciate your help! I actually didn't mean a boot of Linux in W7, but a dual boot (as you probably assumed). I'm going to try the boot repair on the ubuntu forum, right after I finished to get my scanner working in W7 :x .

Thanks for your help so far!

Mmm, it's kinda weird. I can view the other partitions in Disk Management, but when I right-click on them, the only option is to delete the partition. I can't find how I should fix this. Does someone know how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

hi Andreas, try this from a live CD or USB

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sdXY /mnt
replace X and Y with the appropriate drive and partition for Mint boot.

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdX
note - there's a gap between =/mnt and /dev, and no partition number after sdX. It will re-install Mint's grub back to the mbr, which was over-written by the Windows installation.

hi Andrea,
live boot using "system rescue cd" with the option to boot to an existing linux system on the hard drive.
Once you are in mint, install grub or burg.
hope this helps.
