961Mb is the reported size on the website
transmission reports 1.01 GB
(I believe the convention is to use MB rather than Mb; i did a copy/paste from the download page and just noticed the difference)
I'm assuming this will upgrade smoothly into final 14. Is that right?
I chose MATE over cinnamon because it is a larger iso, and because I trust MATE more. I still don't understand why there are different iso's, except as a bit of cuteness.

Mate and Cinnamon are totally different
The main check that should concern you, is the MD5 and then the media check from the menu on the burned DVD
