Need advice: I can't install an ATI driver to save my life!

Post by empire--dumps »

Greetings,
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to read into my problems.

Well, I started using Linux Mint 14 64 bit cinnamon today. I'm having some serious issues installing an ATI driver for my Radeon HD 6770. I don't know what I am doing wrong, I can only suspect xorg. Mainly because I don't have it, and not by choice lol. I've been reading into it. I see some people using it with mint, where other people say to use something like xranda or x randy. Its something close to that. So right now I'm using the generic driver, I have a dual monitor setup and running. After the ATI driver installation. When I reboot, Mint loads up. The monitors go into mirrored mode and now the task bar is white and the menu is now somewhat like a Windows start menu. When I uninstall the ati (given the tuts below) reboot. It goes back to normal cinnamon.

These are the best tutorials I found, I was referring to while I attempt to install:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/124292/w ... vers-fglrx
http://askubuntu.com/questions/74171/is ... -in-ubuntu

These are the drivers (Well, I tried both to rule out faulty new drivers):
v12.10 http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... ng=English
v12.08 http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/w ... 6&rev=12.8

To my understanding there are 3 methods people can use to install ATI drivers with Linux. .run, .deb or an automated package like jockey-gtk(additional drivers). I've tried them all! Though I was confused about the .deb. Not the unpacking bit, but to which .deb I should install. Or all of them. There was 3 packages in total, 2 seem to have the same name and the other had amdcccle in the name. Last time I tried I installed all, I figured a warning would inform me and this info wasn't in the tut.

But when I run sudo aticonf -initial -f after the installing. When I check the file, there is some text from ATI saying it created the file because one didn't exsist. No parameters, just a simple comment. SO I NEED XORG, right? Well I ran sudo apt-get install xorg and I don't know what is happening but I still can't find the xorg.conf file. I'm really lost.

So thank you for your advice. Please don't hesitate to ask,If you need any additional info or images. I don't know what information is required for diagnosing something like this. I will re create and post pics tomorrow as somewhat late for me. Promise. Please get me off of Windows! :D

Your truly,
-E--D

I didn't find anything by that name in MY menu within Mint. Maybe you were referring to another menu? I will look into it first thing in the morning! Thank you. The more alternatives the better.

I really need that xorg.conf. Not only for video driver whatnot. But its the only way I know how to configure my mouse (DeathAdder). The sensitivity is ridiculous atm lol

I found it! But I'm having trouble using it. It did find the card, and the driver options. YEY!, but it doesn't allow me to do anything. Such a tease! :D I can't click/activate anything within the window.

To my knowledge, I currently don't have a "ATI driver" installed.

thanks, they moved the 'additional drivers' into a subsection of 'software sources'
after first install i tried to play a video and had to reboot it was so bad
using A8-apu
guessing the regular ati driver will work fine as it did in lm 13, the updated driver never worked for me
...
it is done installing, no reboot required i guess, here goes with a video :)
...
'movie player' tried to open but never got a window, tried different videos
...
vlc worked great

For 64bit systems Install ia32-libs before doing anything.

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

Run each of these, one at the time, if getting any faults ignore it.

sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*

Remove your xorg.conf file

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Re-install xorg

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 xserver-xorg-core

Configure xorg

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Reboot:

sudo reboot

Why this is so freakin confusing for me. Nothing applies.

Code: Select all

Re: Need advice: I can't install an ATI driver to save my li

Post by empire--dumps »

Glad, I can now report with some success.

So eventually, I decided I had to reformat. I gave up on manually installing. Also I couldn't get software solutions to stop saying I had already been using a driver. (i.e couldn't select) I couldn't find the previous ATI baggage left behind from trying to install and unistall all those times.

After reboot, install. I ran Software Solutions again and it now allowed me to select an option. I applied changes and after reboot I could now 'gksudo amcccle' (Catalyst Control Center.) Its working just fine and the driver is the latest.

Regarding the mouse, I just said screw Xorg and tried to find another way. What I ended up doing was creating a shell script to adjust xinput on startup.

Here is how:
Terminal>xinupt. Take note of the mouse ID name. Not the #.
Create a new .txt. document and type: (You can play with the numbers for adjusting)

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
xinput --set-prop "Razer Razer DeathAdder" "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" 3
xinput --set-prop "Razer DeathAdder" "Device Accel Velocity Scaling" 1
Save. Then remove the .txt from the name.
Terminal> sudo chmod +x /your new shell script
you can try out the shell script now to get it to your liking.

Then move this file to a directory
sudo mv /path from/ /path to/

Then use 'startup apllications' in the menu. Added a new command and reboot.

But thank you again mank_in. If it wasn't for you I'd still be at square one. Feels so nice nice, having this issue on my mind. If there is anything you need or think I could give you a hand with. You can PM here or at empire--dumps@live.com. Would love to return the favor.
