Solved:How would you recreate a deleted user & keep same # ?

Postby Lantesh » Sun May 04, 2008 9:26 pm

When you first install Linux the main user is user 1000. If you have deleted this user, is it possible to recreate the user, and have the user number still be 1000? Each time a user is created, it is numbered in sequence, and it seems that the resulting number can not be changed, but I am wondering if I recreate a deleted user if the old number will be applied. Any thoughts?

Yes. Just change the uid with

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -u NEWUID username

If you want to create users with a specific uid,

Code: Select all

sudo adduser --uid NEWUID username

This is ofcourse done in the terminal, since the users option gui is pretty feature-less.

Ede, thank you sir! I appreciate the info. That should fix the issue nicely.
