Upgrading and retaining /home contents

Well its been a while since i have been on this forum purely because i have been happy with Bianca. With all the cool stuff going on now i feell its time to upgrade to Elyssa.
I remember making a previous post with all the little issues i had with bianca, it is here so hopefully i wont have to deal with a few of them again. If i get balsa and the 3g card working i'll be happy.
OK so to the point- i wisely decided to keep my /home directory on a separate partition. There are some folders and files i want to keep from that directory and so i my questions is what should i do to retain all these files?
I don't think i will change the partition sizes, although i might reduce my swap partition, however i realise i will have to reformat /. I know i can assigned a new /home folder but i am a little lost on the procedure to transfer files. Should i really just copy the important stuff off to my nas and reformat the whole lot or is Elyssa smart enough to scrub all the bianca specific stuff in my /home directory?
