Mint 13 Boot screen garbled

Post by toddbailey » Sun Jun 02, 2013 4:08 am

Hi All,

I have 2 identical machines, both running Mint 13 lst x64. On one machine, during the boot process, the screen is garbled.
I've tried changing screen resolutions between 640x480 to 1024x768 but the screen remains scrambled.
Once the login screen is displayed, it's business as normal.

I'm running nvidia gt 9800 over hdmi, in case it matters.

Any ideas what to try?

Maybe try a newer nvidia driver.

Mint should make 14 or 15 a LTS. I find mint 13 so much more buggy than the newer mint versions. If it's buggy, it should be short term.

I'm using noveau drivers, since nvidia drivers are broken, w/no audio over hdmi,

And I not entirely sure that (what) drivers are loaded during an other wise text mode boot up process. But I'm no expert in the subject

I've experimented a little by adding vga = 0xXXX and also changing GRUB_GFXMODE=

Each change give me a change but nothing readable...

On another note, I'm only seeing this issue with the current install, It hasn't been a problem with mint revs. 10, 12, 14, & 15
I decided on Mint 13 since it's still supported and audio works, now if I could get the rest of it to behave.

Hi toddbailey, have you tried amending your etc/default/grub file?
Find the line that says GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" and add nomodeset so it becomes GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset".
Run

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
after
regards

Nomodeset fixed the garbled boot screen, but now after boot completes and login instead of a 1080p display, I'm getting a max of 1280x800. I tried adding gxmode of 1920x1080 in the grub file and no difference, so I removed it.

I was thinking maybe reinstalling nouveau* drivers and firmware, still no difference.

The good news is I still have audio over hdmi.

there is no formal xorg.conf, should I copy one from a twin machine (running nvidia drivers) and make a few edits?

Well that's a start. So now the boot up sequence is okay, but the graphics card drivers seem to be a problem. I've never tried editing xorg.conf files, but it sounds like it's worth a try. regards
