Wifi on Mint 15 live-disk, no wifi after installing

Post by 0AintLifeGrand0 »

Hi all,

I have a strange issue after installing Mint 15 Cinnamon edition on my ASUS laptop.
I had Mint 13 KDE running, but was not completely stable so I decided to update to Mint 15. After trying the live disk I found no direct issues, wireless also worked without problems.
So I removed Mint 13 and installed Mint15.
After solving a nasty UUID problem with GRUB2 I got the system up and running, but the strange thing is that now my WiFi connection does not work. (Adapter is also not activated).
Since it worked on the live-CD I don't expect to need proprietary drivers. Any one got an idea how I can get teh WiFi adapter working?

Thanks,

It depends on why it's not working. It could be a matter of having a missing driver activated on startup or that the system incorrectly configures it (or uses the wrong one) on install. Do you know which driver module should be activated? And have you checked

Code: Select all

lsmod
to see if it's active?

Although I have been working with linux for quite a while, I consider myself a n00b on system admin level.

All I know is that it works on the live CD, without doing anything special.
And it doesn' t work after install. When I boot up from the live CD it shows me no proprietary drivers are active.

When I run lsmod it shows me this (booting from the live CD, so where wifi does works):
(Since I don't have a clue what to look for could you please assist me some further..Please tell me what to look for when I do the same on the non-working installed version)

Re: Wifi on Mint 15 live-disk, no wifi after installing

Post by 0AintLifeGrand0 »

Hi All,

I'm pleased to announce that the problem is fixed. I don't exactly know how, but here's how I did it.
After playing around a bit I found that not only WiFi but also the audio card was not detected. Earlier I also had GRUB issues (UUID of the Mint partition in grub.cfg was incorrect). So I decided to re-install mint. I tried several re-installs and eventually I messed up the whole system, cause I also re-formatted the /boot partition within the extended partition that I had reserved for linux stuff, and now even grub didn't load anymore :), ended up in the grub-helper system.

Little history...
Back when I had a working Mint13 system I had huge problems getting Windows dual booting with Mint/Grub due to my UEFI enabled labtop. Back then I changed the GPT partitioning scheme back to MBT (I don't have large disk so does not matter to me) and that finally enabled me back then to make it work....

Back to the present....
I thought maybe something wrong with the boot record? Since, nothing worked anymore. So I used the boot-repair tool from Ubuntu repositories and found a button, "fix MBR". I shouldn't have done that :)
Now I do not even end up in the grub-helper system anymore, but I get a Windows "BOOTMANAGER is missing" error and I can only press Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Now the fixing part....
I noticed that when I had the Mint Live DVD in the drive and went to the bios of my labtop, it mentioned an EFI boot on the DVD drive..., So I thought: Is it loading mint in EFI mode and expect some GPT partioning and is therefore everthing being messed up? So I turned disabled boot from EFI devices and went to work.
First I got the windows DVD and recovered the Windows bootmanager. That worked perfectly and windows was starting again.
Now getting linux up and running in dual boot....
Now that windows worked I re-booted from the Mint live DVD (still got 'boot from EFI device´ disabled).
I removed the existing extended (and logical) partitions and started installing Mint.
I chose the automatic 'install next to windows' option, because I didn't want to mess up things manually again.

After the install I rebooted, and everything, including WiFi, Audio and grub is working like a charm :)

I cannot confirm it, but I do have the feeling that the 'boot from EFI device' option in the Bios is the cause of all the problems I had.

Anyway...
Problem is gone, and I am not going to try to reproduce it ;)

Thanks for the help so far, regards

PS. I sure hope the UEFI/GPT configuration stuff is more 'bug' free in the future..... It has now caused me quite some effort twice. My first ubuntu installs where far more easy on my old non-UEFI labtop.
