Not possible to install Mint 15 without PAE?

Post by Mons1 »

Hi!
I have an old computer with Intel Pentium Centrino M 1,7GHz. This CPU don't have support for PAE.
PAE is only useful if you have more than 4GB RAM and in this case the computer don't even support 4GB maximum.

If its so that latest release of Linux Mint don't support CPU wo/PAE, then its very sad. Linux was the best alternative for old computers.

What distro is now recommanded for old computers wo/PAE?

My computer do run Linux Mint 13, but i want to make the user-profile a fresh restart. How can i remove User-Profile and then recreate it?

Linux Mint 15 indeed does not support non-PAE processors. For now it is recommended you use Linux Mint 13 on non-PAE processors. You can get the Linux Mint 15 version of Cinnamon, MATE (and other desktop environments) and the Mint tools if you want. For that go to Software Sources and enable backports, then run Update Manager to install the newer software.

If you want to start with a fresh user profile, you could create a new user. It depends on your desktop environment which preferences files you would manually delete your your existing user to reset it.

I've actually got Mint 15 to install on both a PAE and a nonPAE based PC.

- Mint 14 would *not* install onto the nonPAE based PC.

so, give Mint 15 a go & see if it actually does work for your PC.

No i doesn't!
Normal boot from DVD freeze the computer. When i boot it in compatible-mode i get a message that the CPU doesn't support PAE.
I should be i CPU detection on DVD that check for recomanded CPU and gives an understanding message that tell us that det CPU is not supported, and not like this that the computer freeze. :-(

The good news is Mint 13 is supported for another 4 years so I would imagine by then you'll need to replace the computer anyway.

While Ubuntu dropped support for all non pae capable processors there might be a way.

1) Install Mint 13
2) Install Liquorix non pae kernel, or Debian 486 kernel (I dunno if it works with Ubuntu).
3) Update to Mint 15 using apt-get, leaving liquorix kernel of course
4) Boot with liquorix kernel, remove default Mint 15 kernel if neccessary.

Or other idea
1) Install Mint 15 on PAE machine, replace kernel with Liquorix
2) Boot on non pae machine (might or might not work of course).

Many newer Pentium M revisions do support PAE - are you sure Mint 14 or 15 does not boot on your system?

AlbertP is right, but if you are unfortunate and really don't have PAE, you can always try to use Linux Mint Debiam Edition. It is even better for old computers ;)
