newbie question about compatability mode

Post by wyz »

When I try to run either Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon or KDE from live dvd they freeze up (no mouse or keyboard movement). Can these distributions be installed from compatability mode?

Hi

Compatibility mode should be fine, I'd be inclinded to use it & run for a few mins (I get a few problems running my system in full blown compatibility mode)

When you use this mode it actualy starts up with a few extra switches in the boot line

xforcevesa = Forces a basic display mode
nomodeset = Useful for fixing display problems
b43.blacklist=yes = Disables some problem wireless network "drivers"
noapic = Disables power managment stuff (apparently best not to use this)
noapci = Same as above
nosplash = Hides the boot splash screen
irqpoll = Not sure about this one

You could use the
key to edit the compatibility mode line & remove a few of these until things work ok
If your having display problems try removing everything except 'nomodeset' & maybe 'forcevesa'

The "irqpoll" boot parameter reduces driver initialization failures due to shared interrupts. It helps to get systems with badly broken firmware running.
