Very easy way to install (dualboot) LinuxMint on MAC

Postby ioan » Wed Dec 18, 2013 10:24 pm

Hi,

I've just installed LinuxMint Petra on MAC Air (mid-2012). You end up with three operating systems: OSX, Windows, LinuxMint following the simple steps below.

1. Install Windows via bootcamp. I used Windows 7 (with Mavericks MAC OSX). LinuxMint will be later installed on the bootcamp partition so keep this in mind when you size it.
2. Boot LinuxMint from liveDVD and start the install. During the wizard, you make space for LinuxMint by reducing the space taken by Windows 7 on the bootcamp partition.
3. After LinuxMint finishes the install, its boot loader takes over (you can always override and switch to MAC botloader by pressing option key when powering on). You can boot in LinuxMint or in Windows (you're presented with MAC option too but this won't work). While in Windows, you can set to restart in Mac via bootcamp app.

Everything seems to be running fine under LinuxMint, except the mic in Skype. But I understand this is a wider Skype problem in LinuxMint 16.

I'm assuming this straightforward approach works on other MAC machines. To roll back, all you have to do is removing the bootcamp from MAC OSX.

Cheers,
ioan
