LM 16 does not boot on thinkpad x40 [SOLVED]

Post by 52ROSt »

I am new here and I am new in the Linux world.

I created a DVD from the ISO file of v16 32bit. This DVD boots fine on my Thinkpad x230, thus I conclude that the DVD is without a problem. However the DVD does not boot on my x40.

This is what I did:
- Changed boot device to DVD player
- Inserted the DVD
- started the process

This is what happens:
- DVD starts running
- A window shows on top Linux Mint logo next to Linux Mint text, all centered
- Below appears the count down information; Linux Mint will boot automatically in xxx sec
- After the countdown reached 0, it is to be heard and seen that the machines access the DVD drive for about a minute
- Then nothing happens for a long time (>30 min).

Next I did
- give up booting
- searched the forum
- did not find the solution
- wrote this question

Next i will do
- appreciate any hint which helps me to get the machine booting to install Linux Mint on my first computer.
Thanks in advance!

I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition on my X40...
The X40 uses a Pentium M CPU, which does not support PAE, and LM 16 is built on a PAE only kernel. So, as you've observed, LM 16 will not boot on a ThinkPad X40, or any other Pentium M equipped laptop. You will need to choose an edition with a non-PAE kernel.

Thank you very much for the hint with Debian. I am working on it using the Cinnamon version.
May I please ask, which version are you running and why?

Forget Cinnamon. Mint Mate 13 works in Thinkpad T40

Well, I'm currently running LMDE MATE because I felt the X40 with it's relatively low specs would benefit from the "lighter" Debian base and the MATE desktop evironment. And, I've been happy with it so far.

If the Ubuntu base is preferred, LM 13 MATE would be a fine choice also.

Thanks for both of your advice about MATE. I will try MATE in the next days.

Here are my observations from the Cinnamon attempt; I hope it is helpful for others.

About the second or third attempt to boot was successful for the first time and I could see and feel LM running. Nice!!! Several other attempts I had to face the following problems:
One time the boot procedure stopped showing following message:

INIT: Entering runlevel: 2
...
a long list of OKs
...
last OK
[ok] Starting SMB/CIFS daemon: smbd
[warn] VirtualBox Additions disabled, not in a Virtual Machine (warning)
FAIL startpar: service(s) returned failure; plymouth.... failed!

One time it stopped completely. Switching PowerOff got LM back to life and a proper shut down happened.

The other times the above described screen appeared but booting continued. Next, I saw a round rotating mark appeariung in the center of the screen, which than changes into a cursor arrow in front of a black screen. Then a green black striped screen appears with the following text in blue characters:

“User mint wil login in 8 seconds” – top right corner

Also waiting for more than 10 min during which the CD/DVD drive continues running as it did it from the beginning. nothing happened. It is impossible to move the mouse cursor, no reaction to any key except Power Off.

I observed that when I move the cursor as soon as it appears in front of a black background more or less continuously, the count down for the user mint continues beyond the 8 s and LM gets fully running from the live DVD.

I will nevertheless follow the MATE advice.

Although I want to change to MATE I got the Cinnamon running with the "moving-cursor" trick in previous post and wanted to learn how to install LMDE.

When it came to partitioning the HD, I did:
Created a new partition table

/dev/sda1 for root
free space preceeding: 1MB (default)
new size (MB) 12500
free space following: 25653 (automatically assigned)
Create as: primary partition
File system: changed default ext2 to ext4 for root
label: root-rost

/dev/sda2 for swap
free space proceeding: 0 MB (default)
New size: 550 MB (RAM 504)
Free space: 25103 MB (automatically assigned)
Create as: Primary partition (default)
File system: ext2 (default, and I don't know better)
Label: swap-rost

/dev/sda3 for home
free space proceeding: 0 MB (default)
New size: 550 MB (RAM 504)
Free space: 25103 MB (automatically assigned)
Create as: Primary partition (default)
File system: ext2 (default, and I don't know better)
Label: home-rost

With this I ended up that I could not mount the partitions: In GParted I opened Partitions menu but the item "Mount" is greyed out, thus not usable. General internet search did get me further. I am stuck.

What are your recommendations? If different to MATE please also advice also on this.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Thanks for the help with the Youtube video. This was the solution; really unbelievable simple. The MATE installations is running...

Just info for others: Also booting LM Debian 201403 MATE 32-bit, the loggin of the user "mint" freezes. For me, moving the cursor once it appears a small roung mark (the sandglass in windows) until the LM screen appears helps always to avoid the hang up. Note that the cursor has to be moved until the user mint is logged in otherwise the system locks up. I stopped once at the last second of the count down and had to do all again.

Last question as I am a newbie. HOw can I flage my question as answered?

Thanks for this hint as well. BTW. LMDE Mate 32b runs pretty nicely on my ancient x40!
