Can't install Mint on my laptop

Postby norseman » Fri Sep 19, 2008 11:40 am

Can anyone help help me. I've got a laptop I used to run XP on. My girlfriend got a new laptop, so I thought it was time I tried to install LinuxMint on the old one. It is set to boot from CD, it loads the splash screen - but then everything stops.

Have tried LinuxMint, Ubuntu, Suse, Slax, Mandriva. None of them worked past the startup screen.

I have been able to install PC-BSD, sooooo eeeeeeasyyyyy - and GParted worked as well.

Any fresh ideas whether I can install Linux on the laptop or not? - and how do I go about it

It's an ASUS M2400N with 756MB of RAM

There have been problems with some Asus chipsets and Linux. Do you know what chipset this machine has?

I checked and believe it uses the Intel 855GM chipset.

I surfed the net - maybe it's a bios upgrade that is needed???

You may try upgrading the BIOS. It will probably improve your chance in installing Mint on your laptop.

I tried similar attempt with an AMD machine back then, and it did show a little improvement. I couldn't get the installer to run at all before the upgrade, and could afterwards but got stuck at step 2/7.

One thing for sure, it won't bring you any harm.

Edit: Have you tried the XFCE version? The problem I explained above occured when I tried the Main version. The XFCE one installs and runs smoothly on the AMD machine.
