not good at all, hiren usually boots on any pc or the pc has a problem.
try to reboot then Dos progams, then testing tools and try some of the tests.
Also check if the memory is seated ok (you will have to open the bottom of the laptop)

windows 7 iso, put it on stick with some tool (windows 7 usb dvd download tool), plugged it in, boot it, erased everything, install, install complete... yet, linux behaves the same... when i boot it from the stick, the GRUB menu shows, i hit RUN LINUX MINT 17 CINNAMON 64 BIT, the screen goes dark, a linux mint logo appears in the center of the screen and... that s all folks... no go from there on.

LE: and yes, straight image, the same i use on the rig that i m typing on...

can't believe it but anyway
while in windows:
Running dxdiag.exe from the run menu will bring up a short summary. You can then click the Save All Information button at the bottom produces a very detailed list of installed hardware and drivers.

and run this

didn t do it yet. i' ll post a pic with it, just so there is no doubt about it being done.

Later Edit:
Did the test, apart from telling me i don't have the graphics driver installed, it gave no other errors.

I'm going to try a Mint 13 install, see where that goes...

Later later edit:
This is what trying to run linux mint 13 looks like:

Have you already tried to install Linux MInt 17 in UEFI mode? Honestly I don't understand why anyone would want to install a UEFI capable os like Linux Mint 17 in legacy mode. The UEFI mode and it's GPT partitions are far superior compared to legacy mode (emulated bios). Just make sure secure boot is deactivated.

Here, that's copied from a post I made in another thread: To install Linux Mint in UEFI mode the simplest way is to hit F12 or what other key brings you into the boot device selection screen during the boot process (if in doubt look it up into your mainboard's manual). There you select the entry which says something like UEFI followed by the name of the live dvd. This way you start the live dvd in UEFI mode and only like this you are able to install Mint in UEFI mode. Oh, by the way, make sure you disable secure boot in the UEFI menu prior to installing Linux Mint.
