Using DD to make a USB drive

Post by turtlebay777 »

I have used Gparted to make two roughly similar sized FAT32 partitions on my 8GB USB Flash drive and I want to put an installation copy of an ISO file on the first part /sdb1, and to leave the other part, /sdb2 free for data.

I tried doing it with the utility in ACCESORIES in LMDE to make an iso on an USB stick but that destroys the partitioning.

I'm sure I read an article on here on the last few days about how to do it using DD but I've lost the link. I tried searching the forums but I can't find it.

Can anyone help please?

Code: Select all

dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdX
X will equal your partition number you wish to write to

dd examples are numerous if you google

VastOne is quite competent

Probably another post on his own forum for vsido

And some tips about reusing old USB drives to remove all old traces that can hang you up with help for installing to uefi's. Somewhat specific to another distro, but good information here
