software sources ruined after initial update from new mint

Post by ack0329 »

I have just installed for the 4th or 6th time Linux Ultimate Cinnamon Mint distro and always after the first updates me sources list are kyboshed.
I can't ad ppa's from command line, view sources from the menu, or open them from synaptic either.
Please help me troubleshoot as I hAVE READ EVERY google hit and there are an infinite number of reasons that can cause this and just as many solutions it appears.

Hello, ack0329.

Note that the "Linux Ultimate Cinnamon Mint distro" is not really a genuine Linux Mint any longer, because somebody outside the Linux Mint makers team has modified the genuine Linux Mint installation system and rebuilt the ISO.
Nevertheless, it should be possible to find out what is wrong and how to solve the issue(s).

Please, open a terminal window. Execute the following commands. Post each command's screen output here, please. (between [ code ] tags)
  • Exact Linux Mint version and content of sources list files:

    Code: Select all

    inxi -Sr
  • Using the sources list files, try to update the local list of available software packages:

    Code: Select all

    sudo apt-get update
  • Which mintsources package has been installed:

    Code: Select all

    sudo dpkg --list mintsources
  • Can it be launched from the command prompt?

    Code: Select all

    gksudo mintsources
    If any error messages are displayed in the terminal, we would like to read them
  • Can synaptic be launched from the command prompt?

    Code: Select all

    gksudo synaptic
    If any error messages are displayed in the terminal, we would like to read them
Cheers,
Karl

Thanks you so much. My one biggest reason to go back to Ubuntu is they probably have the best and fastest responding forum in the world perhaps. Mints forums for the past 5 years of its' existence tries hard but fails in this regard. you have given me some renewed optimism. I have installed Cinnamon on over 20 computers in the past few years and have been the relative guru. So thanks for giving this a try ... it is really appreciated. Maybe we can learn something here. So here we go.

By the way, You are awesome Karichen, Thanks in advance.

Cool never new how to use this code button -COOL.

I guess this is for the faint of heart after all Bump Bump

Here are a few other things I have tried to no avail.
renamed
mintSystemBKU
mintSourcesBKU
mintUpdateBKU
commonBKU

I manually reinstall mint-meta-core, mintsources mint-info-common mint cinnamon, mint-common, mint-meta-cinnamon and a bunch of other mint-*

and about to restart wish me luck
nope same problem arghhhh

perhaps a re-install of mint cinnamon 17.1, but (I digress) I already have it on another partition and sadly it is sooo slow and laggy and also video tears
I thought this might be my salvation

Hello, ack0329.

In your reply, everything looks great except, of course, the terminal output of the commandline "gksudo mintsources".

Which result in 2 more questions / tasks:
Please, post the output of the commandline

Code: Select all

lsb_release -sc
Please, locate this file: /usr/share/mintsources/qiana/mintsources.conf and post the first lines of the file:

Code: Select all

head /usr/share/mintsources/qiana/mintsources.conf
Vague assumption: someting related to the release information has been messed up. Some seemingly irrelevant detail, but one which mintsources might depend on to be correct.
(Cf. [SOLVED]trying to add repository results mintsources failure)

Cheers,
Karl

Wow Karl THANKS!,
I was just about to hit the restart button and reinstall with 17.1 usb and ditch this distro and saw an incoming message ... Serendipity to say the least

Here we go ....

Code: Select all

ack@Aarawn ~ $ lsb_release -sc
n/a

Code: Select all

$ head /usr/share/mintsources/qiana/mintsources.conf
[general]
description=Linux Mint 17 "Qiana"
codename=qiana
base_codename=trusty
use_ppas=true

[mirrors]
default=http://packages.linuxmint.com
base_default=http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
mirrors=/usr/share/python-apt/templates/LinuxMint.mirrors
Hmmm what do you think??

Hello, ack0329.

Good news and bad news.

Good news first:
The output displayed by "head /usr/share/mintsources/qiana/mintsources.conf" looks correct.

Bad news next:
The output displayed by "lsb_release -sc" looks totally wrong. It should not say "N/A" but "qiana" of course.

But there is hope:
I do hope that it will be possible to resolve the reported problem by replacing the apparently incorrect/incomplete file /etc/lsb-release by a correct one.
Of course, it is suggested to backup the existing file first. - Might be that in some other situation your not so genuinely minty Mint will need it.

Code: Select all

sudo cp /etc/lsb-release  /etc/lsb-release.backup
On a genuine Mint the next command would fix the file:

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/mintsystem
So another

Code: Select all

lsb_release -rd; lsb_release -sc
should identify your OS as Linux Mint 17 qiana correctly.

So here we go again, but first ..... Thanks Karl,

no joy I am afraid, but I will let you draw the conclusions.

ack@Aarawn ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/mintsystem
/etc/init.d/mintsystem: 11: /etc/init.d/mintsystem: /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSystem/mint-adjust.py: not found

ack@Aarawn ~ $ lsb_release -rd; lsb_release -sc
Description: Ubuntu GNU/Linux testing/unstable
Release: testing/unstable
n/a

Hello, ack0329.

Good gracious, what kind of system is this really? This does not read like Mint, not like Ubuntu, not even like Debian. Very likely it is a mixture of all 3 of them plus/minus someother igredients.

Code: Select all

$ lsb_release -rd; lsb_release -sc
Description: Ubuntu GNU/Linux testing/unstable
Release: testing/unstable
n/a
As quite a few system scripts and commands evaluate thhe file /etc/lsb-release, they are quite likely to fail if they get hose replies.

Also mintSystem seems to be incomplete.

Code: Select all

 $ sudo /etc/init.d/mintsystem
/etc/init.d/mintsystem: 11: /etc/init.d/mintsystem: /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintSystem/mint-adjust.py: not found
I wonder whether it is a good idea to re-install mintSystem, or whether this is going to make your not so minty Mint distribution fall apart finally.

Cheers,
Karl

As a small 'aside' and in no way offering a solution..

Is this, http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultimat ... tcinnamon/, the distro you installed?

I ask as it says on the sourceforge page..
...Purpose of this release is to work as a Live operating sistem, and have all software packages already preinstalled and ready for use straight out-of-box. You can carry it on a USB flash drive and use it on every computer....
It does also mention that you can install it on your hard drive if you wish, but, as that is not the intent of the distro and your experience hasn't been wholly successful I'm left wondering if full installation has been properly tested.

I'm sure that whatever the outcome of karlchen's efforts the Developer of Ultimate Mint Live would be interested in your experiences so they can either amend their documentation or correct the cause of your issue..

All this is assuming I've correctly identified the Distro you are using of course :lol:
