a simple question about bootloader

does windows 8.1 recognize linux mint ? i'm planning to install mint firstly, both of them will be on same hdd.

Have a look at this tutorial but you should always install windows first.

Basically -- NO.

Your best bet to install, witn Mint already there, is to boot from LiveDVD/USB, run GParted, and shrink down the Mint filesystem to make some room for Windows. Recomment 50-60GB.

Once the space is there, reboot using the Win8.1 install media and select the unallocated space. The installer will then format that and do the installation.

After that is done, Win8.1 will have overwritten the GRUB code in your MBR, so you will have to reinstall GRUB to get access to Mint back.
