Reinstall Mint, reuse existing ecryptfs home

Post by halfgaar »

When you have your home on a separate partition, in turn encrypted with ecryptfs, how would one go about reinstalling Mint (for an upgrade), retaining your user data. Without encryption, having home on a separate partition makes it easy. But with encryption, does it handle the already existing home dir with .Private in it well?

Because when installing, it asks to encrypt your home, so I can imagine it tries to create your home dir and run subsequent ecryptfs commands, which would fail, or worse, overwrite wrapped passphrases and keys.

If when installing you get to the installation type screen, select the last option something else. Install the root to your old root partition after formatting it and assign the existing home partition to home but do not select to format it. The new install will then pick up all your settings from your existing home partition.

Before commencing it would be advisable to backup your home partition just in-case there is any problem.

And that would indeed also work with ecryptfs?
