Only black screen after dist-upgrade to LMDE 2

Post by Daan » Fri Jun 12, 2015 8:56 am

Hi,

I performed the upgrade as instructed at http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2013 and all seemed to be fine till after the reboot. After grub, I get some messages on the screen (in large letters) but after that the screen turns black and my monitor says "Input Signal Out of Range! Change Settings to 1920x1080-60Hz". Neither ALT+CTRL+F1/F2/... nor the SysRq key combinations have any effect. Also, the system does not respond to pings or ssh connection attempts. However, if in grub I choose failsafe mode, boot seems to proceed normally and after an additional CTRL+D to continue as normal, I get the graphical login screen, I can log in normally and everything seems to be normal. Still, I prefer to boot from grub in normal mode in stead of failsafe mode (or whatever it is called).

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks!

Daan

If you have some GPU driver like nVidia installed, remove these drivers and install basic Xorg driver and when reaching the desktop, install GPU drivers using Driver manager.

An example if you have nVidia installed, boot to the recovery mode and drop to the root prompt and run

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /
apt-get purge nvidia-*
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
apt-get install xorg
sync
reboot

Thanks for your help, administrollaattori.

I have no nvidea drivers installed. The graphics card on my system is a simple Intel on board graphics card. I have never installed manually any graphics drivers.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Desktop GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2
These are the graphics drivers installed on my system:

I did not install them manually, and it seems not quite right to remove them all.

Note that ther is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf on my system.

Code: Select all

How to check what driver the system attempt to use when booting the normal way?

Hi,

I have a problem very similar to yours.

I upgraded the distribution to LMDE 2. After the reboot, in normal mode I can read messages in large fonts and then my screen becomes almost completely black (although in my case I can see the terminal pressing ALT+CTRL+F1/F2/...)
And if in grub I choose the safe mode, all works perfectly.

My laptop has got an Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Graphics Controller [8086:0116]

Code: Select all

gius@glmde:~$ lspci -vnn | grep VGA -A 12

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0116] (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
	Subsystem: CLEVO/KAPOK Computer Device [1558:4140]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 40
	Memory at f7800000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
	Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
	I/O ports at f000 [size=64]
	Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: i915

00:16.0 Communication controller [0780]: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 [8086:1c3a] (rev 04)
	Subsystem: CLEVO/KAPOK Computer Device [1558:4140]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 43
I do not have any NVIDIA driver installed.
Have you managed to fix the issue? Any suggestion?
