Live cd 17.1 reboots after 'loading initrd.lz..ready' SOLVED

Post by RonaldW »

Hello,

I am trying to run run the Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64bit Live dvd on an AMD Phenom II X4 computer with built in ATI Radeon HD 3000 video.
Booting stops (and reboots) immediately after the message 'loading /casper/initrd.lz.....ready'.
Tried compatibility mode.
Tried nomodeset
I used the same dvd installing Mint on another computer, no problems. MD5SUM's are OK.

Some time ago, I had the same problem with Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. Wouldn't boot. However, the 32bit version did work.
Since the pc now runs Windows 7 64bit, so 64bit should work.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks, Ronald

Is there a 'Secure Boot' option in the BIOS?
If so, disable it.

Have you disabled 'Fast Start-Up' in Windows and then done a cold shutdown?

There is no 'secure boot' in the BIOS.
Fast start-up doesn't seem to exist in Windows 7.
I have done normal shutdowns from Windows and forced shutdowns (pressing power button for 5 secs), no difference.

Thanks Ronald

From another thread:
AlbertP wrote:Sometimes just pressing F8 gets rid of the 'Ready.' screen - the bootscreen will turn black and Mint will load.
Sorry, Win 7 doesn't have fast start-up like you point out.

Seemingly it is possible for a DVD to work fine on one machine, but fail on another.

I'd try [burning] the ISO to a USB pen-drive with the application rufus (in Windows) and try the installation again.

Well, I did burn the dvd on that (my wife's) computer and used it to install LM on mine. No problems there.
First I'm trying the Xcfe version instead of Cinnamon, if that fails I'll try your suggestion.
Let you know tomorrow.

Just tried the Xcfe version. Doesn't work either, but gives an error: Kernel panic: not syncing.
Any idea what that means?

Maybe the DVD/CD drive itself is faulty?

Have you checked to see if there is a more recent BIOS version?

If none of my suggestions help, then I concede I am out of my depth and hope someone else more experienced can help.

I googled the kernel panic: Probably a RAM error.
So I did a memory test and YES: errors.
It will probably take a few days to get new memory, but I will post the results here.

Thanks for your trouble!

Ronald.

I removed the bad Dimm and that solved the problem. LM now boots!
