Hi all

Just installed Mint on one of my computers I already had windows 7 on a different HD. Somehow there as been a change to my bios I can not enter many of it's features most significantly the Boot Sequence. Never heard of this happening before.

Anyone know what's happening and how I can fix it?

Update: with the HD that has mint on it removed, upon starting the computer it posts GRUB rescue...Done some looking around and many say it can not possibly have grub on the computer if there is no Linux HD.

With Mint HD remove, leaving only Windows drive, can you now hit the boot menu key and get into boot menu?

Thanks for your reply

Yeah I can. I have tried doing a windows start up repair that is not working.

I need to be able to boot into my windows disk without having to quickly select F12 because the computer is down 2 flights of stairs from the studio; running up and down to turn the computer on and off again is a bit much.

It posts device xxxxx not found, Grub rescue mode.

I suggest you do this one step at a time.

1. Repair your Win7 boot
without Linux HD, use Win7 DVD and repair it.
test to be sure your Win7 is now working.

alternatively, you can try to repair your Win7 boot by using Linux DVD/USB

What you can do is, boot and select Linuxmint.
Assuming you have internet access,
then, open a terminal, do these commands to install lilo, and let lilo take over MBR

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install lilo

Code: Select all

sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
This should let you boot into Win7, hopefully.

2. Then to install Linux OS, independent on Windows drive.
use this method:
a. unplug cables to Windows Drive.
b. plug in Linux drive
c. boot from Linux DVD/USB, install it. Install grub onto MBR of the Linux drive

test to be sure Linux is booting OK
and test also that you still can hit boot key to get into boot menu.

3. Plug in Windows drive.
Hit boot key to select Linux drive to boot
reboot and run Linux
then, on terminal, run this command

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
hopefully it will correctly create a grub menu for your dual boot.

I will have a go and get back to you.

It was actually my mistake I always unplug the other HD's when installing Mint.

Again Thanks

Just realised I do not want to have to press the boot key, I want to be able to set my boot sequence in the bios, which I can not do any more, something in the mint installation as stopped my bios boot sequence from working.

Windows on this system is the primary HD needed so I want the computer to always boot into Windows automatically unless I change it.

Do you or anyone know what as stopped my ability to change my bios boot sequence?
