Linux Mint on my Dell Inspiron 1525

Postby obiwan99 » Wed Jan 14, 2009 11:06 am

Hi. Iam new to Linux. I own a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed on it. I would like to install Linux Mint on a hard disk partition so I can have the choice between Vista or Mint when I boot. I dont know where to to start and how to achieve it. Can someone help me with a step by step tutorial? Thanks a lot. :)

Here is the Linux Mint 6 User Guide, it goes through boot-up and installation and such. I suggest you do a read-through.
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/ ... nglish.pdf

Essentially you need to burn the LinuxMint6 ISO, and boot up your computer with the cd in your drive.

Do you know how much space you want to allocate on your hard drive for Linux Mint? You can use the automatic resize option in the installer, or you can also manually create each partition you want to use before and manually select in the installer.

obiwan99,

Did you see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a ... 1525&num=1 in regards to your notebook? I actually just finished reading it when I saw your post. By the way, welcome to Mint!

LinuxMint 5 Elyssa caused big problem in Dell Inspiron 530S

Dear Sirs:
According to the Official User Guide of Linux Mint 5”Elyssa”,I learned to Install the LinuxMint-5-r1 Elyssa with Creator burned audio-CD in my Dell desktop: Inspiron 530S(CPU2.20GHz,2MB RAM,250GB hard driver, WinVista Home Basic SP1), At an early stage, screen shown some error words below and stop there for more than 15 hours:
(initramfs) [ 100.556960] ata1.00:revalidation failed (errno=-5)
[ 135.677330] ata1.00: revalidation failed (errno=-5)
[ 142.476084] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0action 0x2 frozen
[ 142.476129] ata2.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:24:00/00:00:00: 00:00/a0 tag 0 pio 36 in
[ 142.476177] ata2.00: status:{ DRDY }
_
This may because I didn’t let desktop to restart automatically! while installing of Elyssa ,It didn’t show the “installation complete” menu,that is: no “Restart now “ & “continue using the live CD” button appear for about an hour, but strangely the resembly menu like “First Boot Configuration” had shown on the desktop screen. So I think it must be sth. wrong, for more than half an hour I forced to shut the desktop. Then I restarted the desktop, hoped the “First Boot Configuration”come forth, but I only found the windows vista, could not find any mark of LinuxMint5. Also the vista’s hard drive D: had nothing at all and needed to be formated. When I formated D:,It has only 37.9MB space (that space is the auto Swap partition or the EXT3 partition for Linux----when I give the Swap partition 10GB,it than jump to 38GB automatically ,it’s odd).
Later,I tried to reinstall the LinuxMint 5-ri Elyssa with above-mentioned audio CD,but it stoped at above-mentioned place: (initramfs)……
[ 142.476177] ata2.00: status:{ DRDY }
__ for more than 15 hours!
And now the window vista D: has only 37.9MB NOW, and no Linux Mint sign at all!
So what can we do now!??
Any help would be grateful. Thanks.
