sharing /home partition

Postby 2handband » Wed Jan 14, 2009 10:15 pm

I have Ubuntu 8.10 installed on a laptop and want to put Mint 6 on another partition. How can I set it up so the Mint 6 install can access the stuff I have on the /home partition?

Assuming you have a unique Ubuntu home partition:
1. In the installation, select the "manual partition" option (or verbage close to that)
2. Identify the partitions that you want mounted in your new Mint ops.
2a. Select the partition where Ubuntu Home lives.
2b. Edit the partition
2c. In the mount input put something like "/media/UbuntuHome"
2d. Continue identifying the other partitions that you want mounted at time of booting Mint
3. Carefully verify your entries

Hope this helps.

Will I have to do anything else in order to access the data?

It should be accessible with the file manager of your choice in Mint. One note as I re-read your original post. hope you're not entertaining any ideas of "sharing" as in make one common /home between ops....

That is what I had in mind; is it not possible?

You can try it. My venture into this territory proved to be "less-than-desireable" (as in un-stable). If you do go forward, back things up BEFORE making the plunge.
