Found 2nd SATA
Removed both IDE (XP) and sda (Mint)
Install 2nd SATA (in CH3) no other drives
Installed edgy live-cd
do not reboot until you do this or it gets weird (ubuntu starts and Mint dies otherwise  "
edited /boot/gub/menu.1st
changed sda to sdb

[/code]
title Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.17-11-generic (recovery mode)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-11-generic root=/dev/sdb1 ro single
#------------------------from-------------------------------------------sda1
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-11-generic
boot

Code: Select all

save then shutdown and re-install other drive (in same channels they were removed from

Almost forgot
repeat form recovery boot option or when you esc for the grub menu to gey into recovery mode you'll end-up on the wrong drive.

Also at least with my mobo, last install is the default boot drive, so now I have to esc on restart get my bios boot menu and select my IDE to get Bianca or XP

The 1 letter change because fstab is using uuid instead pre-uuid method

Hope this helps

sorry about the lame looking posts, need sleep!!!
gere is what 1st SATA drives /boot/grub/menu.1st looks like

Code: Select all

title      Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.17-11-generic
root      (hd1,0)
kernel      /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-11-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet splash
initrd      /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-11-generic
quiet
savedefault
boot

title      Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.17-11-generic (recovery mode)
root      (hd1,0)
kernel      /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-11-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro single
initrd      /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-11-generic
boot

The SATA drive with second grub's menu.1st should reference sdb instead of sda

this is the onky chage required if you disto uses uuid in .fstab

please clarify sda v. hd0 etc

Postby boonafonosa1 » Mon Jun 04, 2007 10:28 pm

In terms of SATA drive references:

Because i dont know the difference between the meaning of 'sda ...' and 'hd0 ...' am having a hard time following the discussions in this thread, and several that followed. If someone would help me make the distinction I think I would better understand what is being discussed.

Ancillary: I am attempting a dual boot winXP and MintCasandra on one SATA drive. Should the device for the boot loader installation be set to (hd0) (Step 7 of 7: last install screen, under Advanced Options)???

Also, I am really impressed with what I have seen thus far in this forum. The utter humanity !) Great work.

Edit: One hour later, up and running. Thanks to everyone who has shared.
