trying to upgrade mint 11 to 17.3 on a dual boot

Post by gatorade »

Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out with another dual boot , windows 7 /mint17.3 problem.
It's the same asus laptop , this hard drive was the one I had set up with dual boot previous to the one i was seeking help with in the thread you responded to.viewtopic.php?f=46&t=216979

I have windows 7 and mint 11 on it, I would like to upgrade the mint to 17.3
i did something with the mint partition a while ago , and now I can't boot into it. I thought i might as well just upgrade to the newest one instead.

I was going to try to follow the instructions I received in the other thread , but it looks like it might be slightly different and I didn't want to screw it up.

I tried what was recommended here

viewtopic.php?f=46&t=217483

but something went wrong and I am getting an error that says : file not found
grub rescue

Heres a screenshot from Gparted

So, I deleted the grub2 somehow , I'm assuming, or didn't set it up the right way in the partition table. What do I do to fix this?

Select Installation type Something else:
- sda5 assign "/", tick the Format option
- sda6 swap
- Device for boot loader installation /dev/sda
- complete installation

I don't know if I did everything correctly , but I'm still getting the same error.

I followed the instructions , and it seemed like everything was working , but upon re-boot I get the same "grub rescue error"

please tell me if I followed your instructions correctly.

That's correct.

Boot the Live usb. Open a terminal, do you get any error message reinstalling grub ?

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo grub-install /dev/sda --root-directory=/mnt
Reboot.

I was still getting errors , so I tried to install it again, I noticed an error while it was trying to install. I was wondering if that's what is causing the problem with grub .

Hmm really strange. Did you verify the md5sum of the downloaded iso ?

Otherwise this procedure may repair failing initrd & grub, boot the Live usb,
Prepare chroot:

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo chroot /mnt mount /proc
sudo chroot /mnt mount /sys
sudo chroot /mnt mount /dev/pts
chroot:

Code: Select all

sudo su
chroot /mnt
Update initrd:

Code: Select all

update-initramfs -u
Update & reinstall grub:

Code: Select all

update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda
Exit chroot:

Code: Select all

exit
Exit su:

Code: Select all

exit
Reboot

"verify the md5sum of the downloaded iso ?"

I didn't do that, at least, I don't think I did because I don't know what you mean , lol.

do you mean the "check integrity of the medium" message I see when I boot the live USB?

I just did the check integrity of the medium, I did not get any errors.

See Check the MD5
Basically run:

Code: Select all

md5sum linuxmint-17.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso
Must return:

Code: Select all

e71a2aad8b58605e906dbea444dc4983 linuxmint-17.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso
The md5sum is available from the iso download page.

I just did the check integrity of the medium, I did not get any errors.
Fine, try the above repair procedure then.
