HOW to set up a win10 & mint 17.3 dual boot

Post by rfd »

aspire e5 runnning win10, booted mint 17.3 off a usb drive and during the mint installation it does not offer dual boot with win10, just to erase the disk for a full mint install. going with "something else" gets me to this screen and i'm clueless as to what to do next ...

see the installation screen image here - http://i.imgur.com/b7KVx56.jpg

The problem is getting Win 10 shut down completely, with no hibernation and no "Fast Startup".

Boot up Windows and enter Windows Disk Management.
Open Power Options and select "Choose what the power button does".
On the next screen, find "Change settings that are currently unavailable"(in blue). Click it, and under "Shutdown Settings", uncheck the box for "Turn on Fast Startup".
If you find the setting "Hibernate" is checked, uncheck it also.
Then click "Apply".
After those are disabled, be sure to use Shut Down to exit Windows. If you use Restart instead, it will STILL enable hibernation.

even with these features disabled, Windows may not fully shut down its boot partition; for that, you must issue the following command in an Administrator Command Prompt window:
shutdown /s /f /t 0

OK, did you reduce the size of the Windows drive (or drives) to provide unused drive space for Mint ?
Review this tutorial (works for Win 10)

Is your hard drive GPT or MBR (msdos) ? msdos partitioning has a limit of 4 primary partitions.

thanx for all yer help, but it's a huge PITA to work with this uefi junk and messing around with partitions and swaps.

plus, i don't really want or need any windows.

so i just bios'd back to legacy and wiped away win10 with a good mint 17.3 install.

amen.

I agree with all that. That is what I did yesterday.
If there is some special reason you need Windows for something, you can install Windows in a VM - https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html
