[Solved]How do I Move from HDD to SSD "Copy Paste" Install Mint 17.3

Post by apemanx »

Hi Guys

How would I copy and paste - then start from my SSD - my Linux mint 17.3 from a Very OLD hard drive to a new Solid State Drive?
I love the setup that I obtained. I will keep the Home files on the Hard Drive but the OS itself I want on the SSD.

What are the recommendations? Reinstall from scratch on SSD and mount my OLD home folder?

I do not know what pitfalls lie ahead such as EFI boot, Grub, Wine and other programs now working differently should I install from scratch?
has anyone done this recently?

Please advise!

Thanks!

Do you have a separate partition on the HDD for your home directories? Or did you accept installation defaults, in which case the operating system files and home directories would be on the same partition.

Hi apemanx,

I've done the same thing with my laptop a few weeks ago.

If you're comfortable with clonezilla, I'd use that.

Plug both hard drives into the same machine, boot it with clonezilla, and clone the one disk to the other. I'm assuming the new disk is at least the same size as the old one? If it's bigger, I'd also suggest using clonezilla's auto-resize option unless you've got a reason not to.

Good luck!

How does Clonezilla manage this JusTertii? I think you cloned the entire hard drive, and not moved only part of it to the SSD.
