Old Laptop Install

I have an old Toshiba A10 laptop and the CD ROM drive is not longer working. It currently has PCLOS installed but the latest update is a mess and I want to replace it with Mint. It does not allow booting to a USB drive though so I'm not quite sure how to go about this.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Keith

I had a suggestion from an irc message that unetbootin would work. It did not. It downloaded the new o/s, modified my GRUB and then I rebooted.

It gave the following:

root (hd14,19)
Error 12:Invalid Device Requested.

I have no idea how to troubleshoot that error.
