Mint 18 fails to boot (error -62)

Post by frisil » Sat Sep 10, 2016 11:27 pm

Hi,
Just installed Mint 18 KDE 64bit and when I try to boot into it, it suddenly stops and drops me into the build-in initramfs shell. This is the only message I get:

[ 2.653946] usb 7-3: device descriptor read/all, error -62

btw, I also get this error in dmesg in my old Mint, but it never caused any harm. So maybe this is not what stops the boot process.
I guess it's just something stupid, something I forgot? It has been quite some time since I've installed a system, I had my old Mint running for years.

I've got multiple OSs on my HD controlled and booted by a backup system on sda1 which uses grub1. So I installed Mint 18 with "ubiquity -b" to keep the old bootloader and added the following block into the backup system's menu.lst:

title Mint 18 Plasma5 Testsystem 64 bit on sda8
root (hd0,7)
kernel /vmlinuz root=UUID=0cfb8a1a-7ec9-4755-885f-bdf5fcb9b0ebro quiet splash vga=788
initrd /initrd.img

This is what bklid tells me:
/dev/sda8: UUID="0cfb8a1a-7ec9-4755-885f-bdf5fcb9b0eb" TYPE="ext4"

SO what did I do wrong? Thanks for any help in advance.

If your mint is on sda8, the correct grub designation would be root (hd0,8)
- not root (hd0,7)
Devices are counted from 0
Partitions are counted from 1
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2018

No, not with grub1. It used to count differently, also starting partitions from 0. My main productive system (an outdated Olivia I could never get myself to replace because it works so perfectly) is on sda6 and I use the grub line "root (hd0,5)", the controlling system is on sda1 and uses "root (hd0,0)"

Oh, eff me! I think I found the error:

kernel /vmlinuz root=UUID=0cfb8a1a-7ec9-4755-885f-bdf5fcb9b0ebro quiet splash vga=788

There is a missing space between the UUID and the ro parameter. Must have happend when I copy/pasted the UUID in
