Trouble getting Linux Mint KDE 18 installed on a MSI GX-70 Destroyer laptop.

Post by Grevim » Thu Sep 22, 2016 3:19 am

Hello everyone :)

I am currently having trouble installing Linux Mint KDE 18 on my MSI GX-70 Destroyer Laptop. I believe the issue has to do with the dual graphic chips on this laptop. It has a AMD A10 APU which includes a Radeon HD8650G chip and it has a Radeon R9 290x HD8970M chip. Everytime I boot from from the disk I get a Radeon Error message and then it freezes while trying to launch the KDE GUI. I have been able to by pass this by launching compatibility mode and even got the software to install but had issues with it after installation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I do not want to use winblows anymore.

Thanks,

Grevim

I had an Asus g-70 with a Radeon 3850 I believe. Which had problems with mint install similar to what you're having. My work around as not perfect but worked for my needs was install ubuntu which for some reason worked perfectly then just tweak it like mint.

In reading here on the forums, I have seen that Linux Mint 18 MATE seems to work well with AMD graphics,,,,, both APU & GPU. Perhaps give that version a try with a live USB stick.
