Bug: soft lockup cpu#4 stuck[SOLVED]

I have been trying to install mint 18 as dual boot but installation hangs as shown:

MSI GE72 apache pro (skylake board)
Nvidia gxt960m

Bios settings:
-boot UEFI with CSM
-Safe boot disabled

Any ideas anyone

EDIT: just seen how bad that pic is..one line reads

Looks like hardware problem. Cpu replacement needs to be done.
I dont think there is setting in Bios to disable cpus.

At startup edit the Grub menu entry and append kernel parameter nomodeset or modprobe.blacklist=nouveau to existing parameters quiet splash, see the release notes > Solving freezes on how to proceed.

I was looking at that before but cpu bit fooled me. Managed to get it installed atleast

I feel compelled to reply to this thread 6 years after since it solved a problem i had long going with my MSI. No Linux based OS (Debian/Ubuntu) would boot up correctly. I believe that happens nowadays more often with some video cards. Anyways, setting nomodeset allowed me to boot Ubuntu for the first time in my laptop. Thank you very much!

Doesn't nomodeset force the system to use software rendering instead of the GPU? In which case this isn't even a solution at all.
