[Solved] Mixed up upgrade from 18 to 18.1

Post by silver »

started an upgrade from mint 18 to 18.1 when my Internet crashed mid update.
Some the system registers that I am now running 18.1 so if I try to upgrade again it wont let me.
The upgrade option in mintupgrade doesn't even show now.
What files need to be edited to make linux think I'm still on 18 so that I can finish the upgrade?

Thanks
Ronnie

Open a terminal (ctrl+alt+t) and run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
Then:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get -f install

Accept that it wont let up upgrade to 18.1.
In the mintupdate app there is no option to upgrade to 18.1, there was before the crash during the upgrade.

thanks

You can copy the text in the terminal with your mouse and paste the text - you don't need a screenshot.

My Mint 18.1: (clean install, not upgraded)

Code: Select all

System: Host: skynet1 Kernel: 4.4.0-53-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: Cinnamon 3.2.7
           Distro: Linux Mint 18.1 Serena
Yours:

Code: Select all

Kernel: 4.4.0-57
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.2.8
Distro: Linux Mint 18 Sarah
The only thing there that is not updated is the display "Distro: Linux Mint 18 Sarah". The Kernel and Desktop are the latest.
It would not matter to me, personally, if the Distro: says 18 or 18.1. I believe there is a way to change that, but I never paid attention to how it is done. I considered it too trivial. I will research it, to see if I can find that particular voodoo.

I have never used the gwendal-lebihan-dev-cinnamon-nightly PPA, so I don't know what problems that might cause...
I wanted to see if this:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com sarah main upstream import backport
had changed to:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com serena main upstream import backport
You might have to manually change that.
Maybe someone more familiar with the process you used can comment...

Here is most likely the culprit:
You have Cinnamon 3.2.8 installed, something, what does not even exist in the repositories for 18.1. So what shall the system do? Upgrading the system via downgrading the desktop environment? This cries for trouble.

An additional problem will most likely be the update manager. I do not know, which version of UM is installed ob your nightly system, but I do know, that 18 & 18.1 have different versions of UM, the version for 18.1 has of course no option for upgrading and will not get it in between of the current half year.

Perhaps the problem can be solved by removing all those foreign packages, but the risk is high, that you need to install new.

BTW: It seems rather unlikely, that an interrupted Internet connection gave the problem, because usually at first all needed packages get downloaded and only, if this has succeeded, the packages get installed / updated.
