Help. How to install Linux Mint 18 in 32 bit uefi

Post by euriel28 » Fri Mar 31, 2017 5:47 pm

hello there maam / sir, i am new to linux. but i already tried mint 17 and used it as my personal os. Now, i bought a netbook which is Lenovo ideapad 100s which runs windows 10 32 bit. i really dont want to run windows 10 in this machine for a couple of reasons thats why i decided to change it to linux mint. i downloaded linux mint 18.1 64bit mounted it in flashdrive. i noticed that it wont boot to a flash drive and read somewhere over the internet that my machine has a 32 bit uefi and the installation media requires a bootia32 to be able to boot. after searching for the procedure i was able to boot it but with no wifi and the installer is crashing. i need help to properly install linux mint in my machine. please..

Hello euriel28 and welcome to Linux Mind,
If it's a UEFI boot then it must be 64 bit. UEFI does not work on 32 bit systems.
If it like My Ideapad you have to change the boot order in the boot setup before it will boot the USB stick.
On mine you have to hit the F12 key to access the boot order menu.

So your Mint stick should boot ok.
good luck.

hi.. i have 32 bit uefi with 64 bit processor.. i manage to boot the os by putting the bootia32 file in /boot in media installation. but my problem now is there is no wifi and sound. everytime i install the os it keeps crashing saying that it needs to install the 32bit grub etc. something like that. but anyway i'll provide some screenshots and procedures I've been following so that we can point what is wrong with it. :)

Please try the fix at this link ....... viewtopic.php?t=204961
or ... https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2254317

To get back Wifi and sound, you likely need to update to the newer Linux kernel 4.10.

Thank you so much for providing me a link. after I've done the steps, i also manage to find and compile wifi driver which is the realtek. sadly, it keeps freezing. sometimes my keyboard and touchpad is not working. I had to reboot the machine to get things under control. is there a way to manually install the newest kernel.? it seems that the easiest way to do that is via command line or update manager with internet connection. :( thank you very much for helping me..

Sorry, it should be Linux kernel 4.8 and not 4.10. Normally, the kernel can be updated with Update Manager but it carries some risks, eg can cause Linux to not boot. If still unsuccessful, get a Wifi adapter dongle or Ethernet adapter and USB keyboard/mouse.

@michael louwe
thanks bro for the additional info,. for now, my last but not the least option is to get a wifi / ethernet adapter. Some people reported that they manage to install mint in 32 bit uefi without problem with an internet connection, they said the installer will automatically download and replace the grub64 with grub32 and update the grub. will try first and report back here. thank u so much brother.
