Impossible install on UEFI bios secure boot disabled [solved]

Post by butiflauta » Wed Apr 12, 2017 4:43 pm

Hi friends,
until a couple of days ago I have installed on my pc on a SSD Samsung W10 wint LM 17.3 both on UEFI. W10 works horrible and I decided to install clean and update to LM 18.1

I install W10 on GPT+UEFI and try to install LM 18.1 booting from usb made with Rufus 2.14 but the installation failed just when installing grub2. I disabled secure boot from UEFI bios and try again with same result. My motherboard is an ASUS and I can't understand the reason why the installation failed when once I made the same with W10 and LM 17.3 Maybe something change in LM 18.1?

There's a bug that keeps messing the grub installation with uefi systems. You'll get details with searching the forums with the error message if you're interested (and if it truly is this same problem in this case). The workaround is to do the installation without internet connection.

I have been using 18.1 in many installs but the other day I made one and it was terrible. No WIFI and several features did not work.
I changed it to 17.3 Cinnamon 64 and everything works flawlessly. BTW it was an Asus. Maybe same bug.

What? If this is correct I can't believe that something works perfect in LM17.3 doesn't work in 18.1, I don't understant this regression. If something works ok why on the following releases don't?

Could be a solution installing without internet? Anybody try it?

Like I said in my first post, you can get the full scoop by reading topics that discuss the explanation. For your personal problem, it's easy enough to just try if it works for you.

Thank you for the answer. My question is motivated by your first post. I am asking if it's the same with mate or KDE editions...

The problem seems to be with the installation of the bootloader (grub) towards the end of the install. So yes I think it would be the same with Mate/Xfce/KDE, because they use the same grub from the same repositories.
Now it's quite easy to just not connect to internet during the install, so as MintyO said, just try it and see what happens.

That isn't as easy as you might think. Some computers have built in wifi and seem to manage, even without passwords, to access the net? Seems to have happened to me. There is no way to disable the wifi other than open the computer perhaps. No option in factory systems BIOS.
I'm just a student, your guidance is appreciated.

How about unplugging the wifi router for a bit, try the install, then plugging in the router?

Because it probably isn't MY wifi, I have dozens of neighbors with wifi, some of them unsecured and open.

Most laptops have a key on the keyboard to switch off/on the Wifi.

I find it really hard to believe that a computer (and thusly made on purpose by the manufacturer) would force an internet connection. If all you say is accurate and this really is happening, few ideas come to mind: Go to a location without accessible connections or use a Faraday cage.

Just disconnect via Terminal

Code: Select all

nmcli dev ## tells the connections
sudo ifconfig wlan0 down ## replace wlan0 using the right interface

In my case I disconnect the cable from the router and the installation works. Now I'm running LM 18.1 and only a few parts of the system are not updated to my mother language. I don't know exactly how to fix...

On the other side I have the problem with a Brother printer DCP-J125, it's now working as usual with Linux

Bummer!

I can't believe people still have unsecured and open wifi these days. Very bad.
