Unattended upgrades on LM 18 not working

Post by kentchristopher » Sat May 13, 2017 4:10 pm

I've noticed that an LM18 Xfce installation I have on an old laptop hasn't been installing updates on its own, as I believe it should be doing with unattended upgrades.

I'm edited the configuration files based on what I could find online. I know there's a tutorial for unattended-upgrades for LM17 which worked in the past, and which doesn't work for LM18. I took what I could from that and tried to apply it but it doesn't seem to work. I'm kind of surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up elsewhere (that I can find). Anyone know of an unattended-upgrades tutorial for LM18.x?

Here are the 2 relevant files in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d:

20auto-upgrades

Code: Select all

APT::Periodic::Update-Package-Lists "1";
APT::Periodic::Download-Upgradeable-Packages "0";
APT::Periodic::AutocleanInterval "30";
APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "1";
50unattended-upgrades

Code: Select all

// Automatically upgrade packages from these (origin:archive) pairs
Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins {
	"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}";
	"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-security";
	"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-updates";
//	"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-proposed";
//	"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-backports";
};

// List of packages to not update (regexp are supported)
Unattended-Upgrade::Package-Blacklist {
//	"vim";
//	"libc6";
//	"libc6-dev";
//	"libc6-i686";
};

// This option allows you to control if on a unclean dpkg exit
// unattended-upgrades will automatically run
//   dpkg --force-confold --configure -a
// The default is true, to ensure updates keep getting installed
//Unattended-Upgrade::AutoFixInterruptedDpkg "false";

// Split the upgrade into the smallest possible chunks so that
// they can be interrupted with SIGUSR1. This makes the upgrade
// a bit slower but it has the benefit that shutdown while a upgrade
// is running is possible (with a small delay)
//Unattended-Upgrade::MinimalSteps "true";

// Install all unattended-upgrades when the machine is shuting down
// instead of doing it in the background while the machine is running
// This will (obviously) make shutdown slower
//Unattended-Upgrade::InstallOnShutdown "true";

// Send email to this address for problems or packages upgrades
// If empty or unset then no email is sent, make sure that you
// have a working mail setup on your system. A package that provides
// 'mailx' must be installed. E.g. "user@example.com"
//Unattended-Upgrade::Mail "root";

// Set this value to "true" to get emails only on errors. Default
// is to always send a mail if Unattended-Upgrade::Mail is set
//Unattended-Upgrade::MailOnlyOnError "true";

// Do automatic removal of new unused dependencies after the upgrade
// (equivalent to apt-get autoremove)
//Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies "false";

// Automatically reboot *WITHOUT CONFIRMATION*
// if the file /var/run/reboot-required is found after the upgrade
//Unattended-Upgrade::Automatic-Reboot "false";

// If automatic reboot is enabled and needed, reboot at the specific
// time instead of immediately
//  Default: "now"
Unattended-Upgrade::Automatic-Reboot-Time "02:00";

// Use apt bandwidth limit feature, this example limits the download
// speed to 70kb/sec
//Acquire::http::Dl-Limit "70";

I seem to recall an update in November or thereabouts that addresses the "Unattended updates". It reinstalled the "unattended updates app" and reinforced it.

I don't know of any Mint user who allows unattended upgrades. I think the consensus here is that you ought to at least have a look at what's going to be installed before letting the system go ahead with it. And I know one of the things I hear Windoze users gripe about all the time is Windoze deciding to do updates at the most inconvenient time. But I guess that's not such a problem when Linux allows you to keep using the computer while updates are being done, and you don't usually have to reboot afterward. If you figure out how to do it, please post back, I know there are others here who mentioned they would like to enable unattended upgrades.

I'm trying to use unattended upgrades in a situation where the computer will be used be an elderly person, so upgrades will happen automatically in the background or not at all. Not really looking for a discussion of the pros and cons.

Given that unattended upgrades seems to be broken on LM 18.x, does anyone know if it's working on Ubuntu?

I don't know whether it works on Ubuntu or not. I provide support for a friend of mine in Nicaragua (I'm in the U.S.) using TeamViewer. If you fear that this person may totally screw it up, set it up so you can access it via ssh.
