Booting issues dual boot two drives

Post by Couch_Potato »

HI,

Been awhile since I posted here, but I do read a lot of your posts looking for answers to my issue(s). First off, as I state above I have two drives one with Windows 7 pro on sda (that won't update but thats another story) and Linux mint Serena 18.1:

Code: Select all

$mount | grep error
/dev/sdb3 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered)
/dev/sda1 on /boot/efi type vfat (rw,relatime,fmask=0077,dmask=0077,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro)
As you can see from above, that the system is using the sda1 for the efi boot partition. This I believe happened after I was booting into windows and trying to get it to update. (some succeeded but... thats another story) Serena up until this time was using the boot partition on sdb1. I have run update-grub w/o success. Additionally, when I login after reboot a password prompts appears caja needs privileges to run. Never, never seen this before. If I enter password, I get a desktop background with no icons but the menus appear and are accessible. If I select cancel, I get a black screen, no icons but menu. I can load the home directory from the menu and Icons appear and functionallity is... restored. However, Boot times have increased and I'm also getting this:

Code: Select all

[ 1.534493] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: xHCI Host Controller
[ 1.534497] xhci_hcd 0000:02:00.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 8
[ 1.534581] AMD-Vi: Event logged [IO_PAGE_FAULT device=02:00.0 domain=0x0010 address=0x00000000ce9f9880 fnlags=0x0010]
Okay I eliminated the above by disabling iommu in firmware and adding kernel parameter iommu=soft. This elminated the above messages, but My keyboard does not become active until after I see the mint progress dots. will work on that in another post.

Here is Serena's original boot efi partition.

Code: Select all

/dev/sdb1: LABEL="Boot" UUID="EA36-36BC" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="redacted"

Code: Select all

I don't have anything about the Mint problem, but just in case the win7 update problem is the same as I had, here: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/wind ... final.html It was a weird case of not getting updates, just endless searching for ones. Saw it on few computers. They released the patch but didn't bother to advertise it much, and not roll it out automatically. The link I posted names the files you need to install from Microsoft.

Thanks Mintyo,

unfortunately the problem described is not what I am having. Just prompts to install important updates indicates I should restart. Repeat, repeat. I have been looking at MS and others. When I get around to it, I'll check that link.
