Linux 18.1 mdm[3115] GLib .... ahh help!!!!

Postby ekr990011 » Mon Aug 14, 2017 4:52 pm

initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
syndaemon: no process found
mdm[3115]: GLib-CRITICAL: g_key_file_free: assertion 'key_file != NULL' failed

So I just added rvm, did a restart... new login screen asks for root password, I input it then I get this error! The whole login screen is completely different, so I start in recovery and I can login to terminals as root. I then restart again and try with the advanced options running with upstart. It has two lines:

Loading Linux 4.4.0-53-generic ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

Help!!!! I am completely lost... :(

When does that happen?
What kind of linux and desktop are you running?

So I just added rvm,

What is rvm and what did you add it to?

did a restart... new login screen asks for root password,

It doesn't ask for a username first?

I input it then I get this error!

Which error? The one above or the one below?

The whole login screen is completely different, so I start in recovery and I can login to terminals as root. I then restart again and try with the advanced options running with upstart. It has two lines:

Did you just do an "upgrade" and/or install lightdm?
Mint 18.2 Xfce/fluxbox/pulse-less - Xubuntu 16.10/fluxbox/pulse-less
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Hi guys!
I am having the same issue. Installed some updates in Mint 18.1 (kde) through the Update manager. One package was broken (had drm in its name if I remember correctly), also received a prompt to choose MDM or SDDM with SDDM as default, I clicked SDDM and now I am with totally broken Mint 18.1 with the same glib-critical error.
I get the graphical login but can't login, the display manager restarts itself on each attempt to login. I tried to fix the issues through terminal, but it appears I don't have any internet this way, so can't change any packages.
Tried dpkg-reconfigure sddm and got message that SDDM is broken.
At the moment I am with 18.2 usb stick but since didn't see an option for upgrade I am reluctant to attempt to install 18.2 (I have too complicated partition structure). Any ideas how to restore Mint 18.1?
In recovery mode I don't have internet for unknown reason :(
