Kernel stuck on shutdown on dell xps 15 9560

Post by naturewise » Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:26 pm

Hello
I have made a fresh install of Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.2 on my Dell XPS 15 9560. The fresh install comes with Kernel version 4.8.0-53. I then updated all packages proposed by update manager, which included the new Kernel version 4.10.0-33. Now, I have the following situation.

Boot with Kernel 4.8.0-53 by choosing it in Grub. Once booted, shutdown or reboot, this works perfectly.
Boot with Kernel 4.10.0-33 by choosing it in Grub. Once booted, shutdown or reboot, this does not work, system is stuck with:

Code: Select all

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 23s!
This line appears a few times. The only way to get out of it is to hard power down the system.

I did not change anything else in the system upon installation, I did not change 3rd party drivers for Nvidia Graphics Card for example. I know that, because I run into this issue after a first installation, then I thought I must have changed something somewhere, then started all over again with a fresh install and only updated all packages.

This is obviously an issue of the Kernel. Does someone know if this is a known issue or could someone point me to the right place where I could report this issue? Any other help would be appreciated as well.

Thank you, regards

naturewise,

I do not know if it helps, but following an install of Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" on two old machines (10-12 years old), these computers would not shutdown. They would just show the Linux Mint logo with only one of the four dots glowing green and then sit there indefinitely. I read a number of other threads related to problems with LM shutting down (most notably viewtopic.php?f=46&t=247048&p=1326259&h ... n#p1326259) to no avail. I tweaked the power settings in the bios of the computers and found no success; however, when I reset the bios to the "optimal defaults" then both computers shutdown normally.

HTH

Unfortunately I never found another fix other than resetting the BIOS back to default.
