Booting takes too long

Postby mintymatrix » Mon Nov 06, 2017 11:37 pm

I have installed LM 18 Mate 64 bit on an old ASUS computer. Earlier every time I installed it something or the other happened and it would not boot. Now since my last install, it is booting but it is taking 7 to 8 minutes to boot and even after booting, the system is way too slow. The mouse pointer moves in jerks, typing has considerable lag and applications take too long to start. There is 4Gb of RAM and 6Gb of swap partition. 30Gb of root and 80 Gb of home partition. It is a 4 core Celeron processor.

Can anyone kindly tell me what information I can extract from the system and give here so that it gets easy for you all to find the problem.

^ Definitely couldn't hurt.

Though it's obvious something is terribly amiss with your OS/install. Might see this to help you uncover what da heck is taking so long or provide some meaningful errors during boot to help out. Also trudge through the output of "sudo dmesg". Could be plenty of easy fixes depending but need to determine the right places to look and focus on to have a clue of what to suggest.

History you seem to have had with that laptop strongly indicates some major hardware component issue to me, some brands or particular system's are outright known to just be seriously gnu/Linux unfriendly. Fact that you've at least made progress with a later version install of Mint, though sounds like still an overall terrible experience. Kinda suggests you may benefit from a newer kernel or something. Though depending upon what it is, wouldn't hold my breath on that system, unfortunately.

With a kickbutt distro like Linux Mint and it's wide range of out-of-box hardware support having such issues, doesn't bode well for gnu/nix success on that system. Can't hurt to try and see what's going on though. Ah one more ... what's the output of "sudo journalctl -p 3" and 2 and 1 ? Esp priority level 2 & 1 there, 3 could be a problem (many times they aren't anything serious) if there's a flood of level 2 or 1 errors, definitely something you want to look into.

^ OUCH, don't do that, at least enclose it in <code> tags or paste-bin the sucker and link to it. A massive flood of dmesg output is never welcomed, such why I typed "wade through it". Should've provided more info, such as using "less" or "tail" along with. Google stuff along the lines of "how to find errors in dmesg +linux" or "how to find errors in dmesg +ubuntu" or linux mint etc. Not saying google to be mean or nothing, though generally diagnose and fix things before having to mess with it and so off the top would have to google myself on how to weed out the important stuff from the TON of stuff dmesg has to say which doesn't matter.

Also places in /var/log/ ... relevant logs are kept to check which can add additional info as to what's going on too. Would go ahead and also do as mentioned, that being remove the splash screen, so you get to see more information. Post output of the "sudo journalctl -p 2" and esp priority 1's. Also another, "sudo journalctl -b" showing errors and info from the last boot done on the system.

Not to be a jerk, overall a tad burnt out on foruming at the moment and don't want to reinvent the wheel. Nor google up any of the gazillion painfully detailed how-to's on each topic from all over the webz on them. Just providing some good pointers. To get you started in a ( hopefully the right) direction. One such topic though here. Mentioned some OEM's are outright known to be less than stellar in their support of gnu/Linux.

Actually never had one but Asus think is one such oem I've seen nixers encounter some major problems with. Not 100% so don't quote me on that and again, a gazillion resources on researching what is, what isn't advisable to buy if you want good Nix support. Good habit to get into if you've got any choice prior to buying xyz hardware.

2 cents.

What was the error message ? That command is relevant to system's and versions of Mint using systemd as the init. Which is by far the one I've come to prefer. Verses if you chose to have SysV/systemd-shim act as the OS's init. Command could very well not work in such a situation. See that about info for the "sudo journalctl -p" thing. Though again if systemd isn't the init etc.

Systemd is amazing in all it (and associated packages etc) can do now vs SysV which lacks so much by comparison it's ridiculous imo. Mint still gives people a choice though cause they tend to go out of the way to please everyone. Which I personally think is a mistake but who da heck am I to question Mint HQ ? Whatever decisions they make, they have every right to make ... 2 more cents.

Arghhhhh ! Dang it one more, personal theory but makes total sense. Such UBER gnu/Linux unfriendly oem's and brands. Cut a backroom deal with M$, partly or fully owned by M$ behind the scenes ? Thus outright go out of the way to make stuff which isn't compatible with gnu/Linux and open source. Seems logical to me and based off of a gazillion other dirty and underhanded things M$ has done to keep gnu/Linux out and inflict open source users with problems. I'd be shocked if it absolutely isn't a fact as to why some make such hostile hardware.

Am sleep deprived and coffee stoked !!! Anyway don't be afraid to use your spacebar "sudo journalctl -p 2 > error2" you can add the file extension if you like, not necessary. Is suspend/hibernate working on the system ? If not see this thread, at the end honestly got to believe that some quirky power management behaviors in Mint with users who haven't gone full systemd was the cause. In addition to some possible other concerns in my opinion on it.

Not so sure how it'd result in 6-8min boot. Considering the init is PID1 and responsible for launching services, in proper order blahblah, could actually be a contributor to it. Not to mention one of the many professed benefits being systemd's ability to execute in parallel resulting in faster boot.

Have you tried anything else on it ? Might want to give ubuntu 16.04 a try for example and see how it behaves in live session on that box. Mentioned ... removing the quiet splash screen could also uncover some useful information as to what's going on. Can't see why you'd be reluctant, it's editing one file as described in the how-to and totally reversible just as easily.

create a new user with admin rights and run the first commands again. your user is taking 6 min and kernel 5min but start with new user
systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 5.101s (firmware) + 4.563s (loader) + 5min 44.057s (kernel) + 10.312s (userspace) = 6min 4.035s

to shorten the dmesg use
sudo dmesg | grep -i "error\|warn\|fail"
also try
systemd-analyze blame

I should mention this here that I tried many bootable Linux pendrives in the past, but non worked. I thought it was because all other had 32bit OS but seems there is some other problem. This is the thread during LM installation : viewtopic.php?f=90&t=256574

Am sorry but the more I post to this, the more confused I get. We've got some serious communication issues going on here. Since your loader is taking so long and then looked at that other thread where you were shown (by michael louwe in the thread) you'd marked an ext4 the /root partition with incorrectly used boot, esp flags AND the window$ OS that was on it at that time, you also had the correct location the ESP =( efi system partition ) marked with those flags too. Surely could easily explain lengthy boot you're experiencing.

Did you ever remove that window$ OS from it ? Basically you are confusing all hades out of me by this point. No a 64bit capable processor, should have no problem running 32bit software or OS's ( just to be sure check output of "lscpu".) At least no reason that comes to mind anyway. Michael louwe also provided some info that seemed to indicate that model may have problems with being able to boot gnu/Linux live media and went into why.

Not sure what else to advise here. Communication is so disjointed don't see any progress being made. So best to bow out me thinks. If haven't wiped out window$ mayhaps yes ... wipe the entire disk and reinstall Mint fresh ?

Perhaps you did not read that thread completely. There are enough snapshots and pictures to show that the entire HDD was wiped off and that is how it is now. But from the beginning the computer is not able to boot from most Linux live pendrives, except the one I used for this LM 18 installation. I knew it will confuse people that is why I kept pre and post installation treads separate.

I am sure even if there is a hardware conflict or failure it can be detected from LM.
Only that I do not know how to do that.

Umm, it's the kernel taking over 5 mins to load, isn't it? Maybe try upgrading the kernel?

Startup finished in 5.101s (firmware) + 4.563s (loader) + 5min 44.057s (kernel) + 10.312s (userspace) = 6min 4.035s

Well, I can do that but just a thought, my 7 years old computer can boot from more than half a dozen linux bootable pendrives, I have, this 3 month old computer can boot from just one of them, There must be some other problem. What can it be ?

booting from a usb live Linux reflects nothing onto a hardware installed system and vice versa ...

when you are in your mint do
sudo os-prober
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo update-grub

I got that computer checked by a repair guy and he said it's main board has problem.
Thanks all of you for help. After it gets repaired I will try installing LM again.
