Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon boot problem (SOLVED)

Hello all.

I am kinda new to Linux so I would appreciate a bit of help with my problem.

I installed Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon on my previously Windows Dell laptop with i5 CPU and integrated Haswell graphics, with USB stick and the installation went smooth until I updated it and restarted.
After that it stuck on Mint loading logo for a long time, after I got tired of waiting and restarted it, it wouldn't boot and kept repeating some error messages that I don't have anymore to show unfortunately.

After that, I deleted all partitions and formated hard drive with intention to try again. But then, every time I try to boot through Legacy Boot: USB drive option, it gives me the following error:

Even when selecting compatibility mode, or even Integrity check, same error.


But when I choose UEFI boot:
EFI USB1 PATH1 (USB FLASH DRIVE)

where I get GRUB install options, regular Linux Mint startup first repeats this error for a bit (which I believe is the same error I mentioned above that I did not have to show):

and then starts it after a bit, but when I try to install it hangs after "Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-fi etc..." option.

I tried reformatting, deleting, creating USB Linux image several times but with no luck.

I went through lots of threads and solutions but with no luck. I don't think it is faulty hard drive because Windows worked perfect until now.

Can anyone help me or must I go back to Windows? :(

Hum, I'm no expert but this looks like a hardware problem.
input/output errors are usually sign of failure of the hard drive or some cable.
Other forumers should have more expertise.

Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum :)

The images are tough to read, but from what I can see in the second one is an I/O error on /dev/sda which is your HDD or SSD in linux terminology.

To try and determine the the condition of your block device, open the terminal application and install smartmontools with sudo apt-get install smartmontools

Then in the terminal again run sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda and paste back the results.

Windows seemed to work ok until now.

Ah, oh well, I guess I have to replace it then.
