Sylvia release

Hello all,

probably it isn't the right place to post this question, but I don't know where to post it; I am happily using, now, Sonya on my home pc (on office ones and on my personal laptop I'm using Xenial) and I'm proudly (let me say so ) waiting for Sylvia to come out. Of course, as soon as Sylvia will be released I'll be the first in my country (I'm joking) to install it but since I have tons of softwares and personal configuration on Sonya, I'm asking myself and you if it will be sufficient replacing "Sonya" with "Sylvia" in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official....list and then updating and dist-upgrading to have an affordable system, or I'll be obligated to backup everything and then reinstall everything from scratch?

The safest and recommended way, is to use the upgrade feature in Update Manager for that. I advise to wait until that becomes available.

Upgrading should then be safe, easy and painless.

The beta's are approved for beta release.
My guess, about 1 or 1,5 month from now you can upgrade

I've found betas dated Nov. 12 on Heanet ftp and installed Sylvia 64 bit on a VM: for the moment it seems bugless, afaik (I've installed on it only Lazarus/fpc and some packages that allow me chrooting and customizing my own Mint).

I've also done a test, replacing "Sonya" with Sylvia in official-... .list, apt-updated and apt-dist-upgraded: from a lsb_release -c after dist-upgrading is a Sylvia ... but I've anyway destroyed that VM. For playing with and testing development and Mint customization, it seems that the beta is OK but for installing in in production (i.e. on my home and work PCs), I'll wait for the official release, building it from scratch, more than upgrading it (is cleaner).

For upgrading within the same series, in this case the 18 series, it's definitely not necessary, nor advisable, to do a clean installation of 18.3. That would be a waste of time.

Upgrading within the 18 series will be easy, safe and painless, because the underlying code base (Ubuntu 16.04) remains exactly the same.

Hi All.
I stumbled into the LM 18.3 64 beta last night and installed it from scratch in this old Fujitsu Lifebook A series laptop. From a DVD I burned from a different 17.3 machine.

It seemed to go pretty good but for me "Steam" jury is still out. Everything worked good but I think I am just used to the 17.3 to 18.2 ways of doing things.
So far no lockups, freezes or anything except occasional typo's on passwords
